I really don't see how everyone thinks that texture is so unfitting. Spy looks at his knife most of the time. A more interesting knife would be a good thing. Fits the style just fine as well imo.

I simply just think it looks uglier than having a normal blade
It's damascus steel, pattern welding. It's not a wood texture, it's a texture that is derived from folding steel, in an effort to remove impurities due to differing carbon contents of the metal.
Nowadays, with our current steelmaking, we don't need to do it, and it's only done because it causes this pretty pattern to arise in the metal, but in older steel things it's done to make the metal better and stronger.
I simply think it would look better simple.
Not many people will recognize this texture as this strange steel type you're going for, most people will just think you did a shady job at turning a wood texture into a steel texture.
So stick to a normal metal texture, so that your razor texture will be recognized a razor texture.

They actually reference damascus steel when introducing the eyelander (which is supposedly made with damascus steel)
I do note that you don't see that pattern in the eyelander, though.
I think the damascus looks nice by itself but I really don't think it fits with this blade or adds much to it. It's just visual noise that's unneeded in my opinion.
Not only do I personally dislike the blade texture (I know, who cares right?) but it also doesn't fit the TF2 style at all. I mean it totally misses the mark.

what mark would that be?
the same level as the jar of piss ? or the steel hammer?
but claiming one item doesn't fit the same asthetic as good as another when clearly it has alot of potential seems daft to me.
I'm not saying it doesn't fit the TF2 universe, I'm saying it's ugly due to unnecessary details that makes it look less like a razor.
I don't like it because it's confusing, and it would look more recognizable and therefor better looking if it had a normal blade texture.
Like Zwebbie said, it's ironic that an item called Ockam's Razor has unnecessary details.
Whew, never expected such strong responses. looks like I have to either convince the "haters" or say, screw you, gonna keep it! obviously I'd like all to like the razor although I am sure that isn't gonna happen. So here is what i will do, I will do 3 variations
with a clean blade
the trick valve did on the eyelander (also has a damascus blade)
a bit more hand painted damascus steel look
I personally love damascus steel, besides the sweet pattern, the stuff is strong, a quote from wikipedia:
"Damascus swords were of legendary sharpness and strength, and were claimed to be able to cut through lesser quality swords and even rock."
and about the ironic thing, it would not be unfitting to the tf2 universe.
I for one love the wood like texture on the razorblade.
Keep it!
EDIT: Also, I couldn't help but wonder, if this is simply going to be a skin of the current Spy knife, how exactly is this razorblade going to work with the backstab animation? I mean, backstabbing people with a flat edge is going to look quite silly
it will have custom animations. there are so many things of the current knife animations that make it very tricky to implement anything other then a butterfly knife, so I need to do some custom animations for it. So I am thinking about a single slice from the center of the back up towards the base of the skull
The wooden patterns on A and D don't seem to fit with the rest of the blade to me. B seems brighter than the rest of the blade and sticks out but it might work if you can lighten up the rest of the metal a bit. C fits the blade's darker tones and it makes the shine on it stick out.
The bright gleam of B looks best I'm afraid, as interesting as the pattern-welding does look.
I would suggest losing the long thin notches at the end, they look more like cracks. If you want notches in it, I'd make them much shorter and very slightly thicker, in a triangular shape. I personally like the big broken bit at the end a lot and think you should keep it.
I am, however, a fan of the inward curved look of the tip on Sweeny Todd's one (I haven't seen the movie, I'm just going on the photo there)

I would imagine that he just wouldn't use the stabbing animation, but would just slash instead. If they decide to make it have the backstab function, it probably wouldn't be hard to animate him doing a broad slashing motion.

Hope you guys like the direction I am taking it in
classic ebony wood scales with a nice damascus blade
'dat there is a fine peice'awork!
Why is everyone so surprised, the original concept image had a wood texture too.
Now that you mention it, yeah that does look extremely strange :S
Also, how's your Gentlemen thingie going?
So yeah, wood design no, but something equally elegant yes.

Personally, I think it looks good.
We'll just have to agree to disagree. :poly121:

The jar also fits Sniper's rugged outback hunter stereotype.
there's nothing wrong with these items at all ( infact i love them )

Also, a more distinct grain in the wood handle would be nice. It looks rather soft right now.
Go for C!
edit: joke, I just added that one :P
I think I like C best.
