I was in the US in march and I was amazed to see that used games are all the rage in the US. People almost exclusively only buy used games, and they're only like 10 bucks cheaper than a new one, and ALL that money goes to gamestop, not for the developers and not for the publishers, they must make shitloads of money with this busyness.
Here in Europe used games are not that popular, maybe you'll find a tiny shelf on a game store with some shitty used games now and then, but not nearly as much as in the US.
it's pretty big here in the UK.
gamestation, and game are both part of the same company. one specialises in pre-owned consoles/games, while the other just dabbles in it, but in real terms the parent company just rakes in a crap-ton of money over it.
in fact, its pretty common to see a deal appear in the window of Game, saying something like "come and buy X game for £49.99", it's usually one of the latest releases, but not one of the big hitters.
Gamestation, located usually less than 100 feet away (i'm serious, it's a common occurance in most high streets here), will have "trade in any of a, b, or c games, and get X for just £20".
usually a, b, or c, will have been the previous months big hitters. this way they encourage people to buy the new game "for cheap", trade in a game that's a little older but still very much in demand, by which they will earn much more money from reselling.
on the face of it you might think they lose money, but really, they don't.
no honestly ...im really lazy at playing games these days... apart from minecraft i dont play much
now ive been told you can complete it without firing a shot (interested how that pans out in the boss battles or is it without killing anyone) and i know "its not just another FPS" only it is........
IM wrong i want to be but at the moment of being two hours in i died once and it just didnt suck me back in...might persevere later
you cant complete it without shooting, the bosses all ways require a fire-fight, you can be a total sneak in the missions though, there is an acievement for completing the game without ever being spotted by an enemy
It quite reminds me of playing thief. you sneak as much as you can, conserving your ammo and special items. then only engage in combat when you need to.
I'm reminded of one part where you need to press a button, but pressing said button calls a load of soldiers down on you. you can fight the incomming soldiers, but you can also mine the corridor, hide until the right time and sneak away, or plug up the way into the room and relax .
I picked it up a few hours before it unlocked here in the US (perfect timing not to be in Australia :P), and have been playing it here and there 15 minutes at a time. So far I haven't been sucked in to play at all. I do however plan to give it a proper go (longer than 15 minute play session) and see if I like it.
Like some of you, I too am disappointed with the visuals. Maybe it's just the art style I'm not into but some of the characters look like burn victims and everything feels really plastic. Maybe everything is made out of plastic in the future.
The atmosphere so far is really nice, I think it could have done with just a touch of texture/grit. Everything looks sterile and fake.
seriously no one has a problem that there default color on everything is yellow or a shade or yellow?
I like how it adds the cool "future" element while using the color yellow..but jesus its someone threw up the color yellow on a post processing effect on the scenes
Edit: Fun tip
Take a screenshot of your favorite game.
Go into photoshop take the following image and place as a multiply or overlay on your original screenshot.
anyway so far I really like the game. I think its missing a few core elements for example grabbing onto ledges or jumping from rooftops to rooftops. twitchy of the animations is a bit sad and the dx11 features are a bit of a disappointment. and a horrible death sequence.
I think the modular upgrade part to the HUD is great. innovative and sleek. definitely worth 44$ and loads of replay in terms of technique.
Just passed the first boss fight, at first I was frustrated til I found a pretty simple exploit
he doesn't follow you into the corner rooms! just dodge from one side to the other when he tosses nades and keep headshotting!
So far I'm loving slaughtering everyone stealthily with the silenced pistol. It's almost too easy once you headshot the first enemy, the others come right over to check out the body, headshot, hide, headshot, hide.
Just started my second run through this time on hard and I'm a little confused, is the only difference between normal and hard the fact that items don't light up and there's no crosshair?
Man the game is awesome. I spent a good 6 hours just exploring the first outside hub and I've already maxed out hacking, strength and a few others as well as having a crazy amount of ammo and weapons that are modded to hell.
The freedom is hilarious. I was in the police office and I went around knocking out the lone guards one by one and dragging them into the vents. By the end I had a vent full of bodies. Then there was Derelict Row where I went on to a roof, slowly crept across a narrow ledge where the windows were and picked the npc's off with my silenced pistol. Oh yeah and I stacked a bunch of boxes in front of cameras in the police office, funny stuff.
Oh and it looks awesome on my Sony Bravia, the colours really stand out.
Loved it, hope they continue on with their own story and leave DX 1 and 2 as their own worlds. Give us a female character for the next one though, want to play as Kusanagi, even if it's only a stand-in
..been said before - probably here somewhere - but the weapon manufacturer 'Steiner-Bisley GMBH' (in weapon specs) is a nod to Daisy Steiner and Tim Bisley, main character names from the series 'Spaced'.
I have over 24 hrs of gametime and i dunn see the ending no way near. But i am thoroughly enjoying this game. The augmentations payoff big time. But overall, they make you feel like a bad ass most of the time. I had the first boss battle which annoyed me, but nothing that has stopped me from playing the game. Really awesome stuff so far!
Bit of advise. If you dont like the bosses invest in the typhoon and a couple of energy slots. A single level 2 typhoon blast will take down 99.9% of enemies. When you get to a boss just chain 2 or 3 together, job done, back to sneaking.
in hindsight (no spoilers but if you want to make your own mistakes dont read this)
I would go for Dermal armor/electrical resist over Cloak. It pays off later.
also read all the emails while your in the TYM management section, its worth being aware of what they're upto.
I only finished it so fast because im off work(and its one of those games that keeps you up at night). It took me 46 hours according to steam. you could finish it much faster but you'd miss alot.

Skip all the side quests, be Adam Douche-son, and use deadly force... you could probably do a speed-run of the game... would be kind of amusing to see that... I wonder if hacking would be worth investing in for a speed run...

easier just to blow down the doors. I found that one out through frustration
yea just a couple blasts with a shotty and it disintegrates. I remembered reading that in the 1st deus ex reviews back in the day and tried it on this one and it worked.

I don't suppose the Typhoon works on doors? I don't like carrying more than my pistol around...

Aside from the bosses, you can complete the game without firing a single shot for example.

all depending on how you chose your augs.

Yeah, I think the character art is really what brings the aesthetic as a whole down.
I don't have any major problem with the environments or the props. They work well for me, and sell the atmosphere and story.

Gonna get the game tonight and hopefully my rig will be able to run it decently.)
they named a man with a gun-arm, Barrat.
I believe it was bobo.
I'm not sure if I should be shocked or amused that you'd think that.
And yes, it was BoBo that made the infamous Penistank.
Though not enough, quite frankly.
(did anyone else choose the 'other, other, ending')

Finish the game and listen to ending after the credits.

Wait, what, you can blow doors down?
I don't suppose the Typhoon works on doors? I don't like carrying more than my pistol around...
Thats whats great about this game, theres so many ways to accomplish everything. Play how you want.
As far as energy consumption, I still find it odd that the Icarus fall-safety system uses no energy, yet punching through a wall uses a whole unit...
