Congrats Eld, I think you'll like the SSD, I'm running an Intel 80gb SSD as my boot drive and I haven't had any issues with space, I put data and games on my secondary drive.
I'm using a tiny raptor drive, 10k rpm, for now, so I'm a big fan of using small fast drives for the operating system and certain apps, and this will be great, since I didn't have the budget to get a ssd now.
I personally think the new #1 is a hack as well, but I don't have the time at the moment to look further into it, besides.. That guy is a jackass.
He did make quite a colorful entry in my thread, but I'm trying to stay civil and humble. Starting drama is too easy. But it did seem like he was trying to plug his own stuff in the thread.
Painting is - for the most part - about mixing colors together
ORLY? This is also the same guy who, in the original winners thread, said that even though he placed second, he felt he deserved to place first because he is better.
Credibility out the window at this:

what a prick...BRING HIM DOWN! Can't believe his self promotion in your thread. Deserves a greentooth slap!
anyway. Congrat Eld. Only just got around to installing your pack, along with the AO mod. Looks great! Shame water couldn't have been edited. Its a bit too blue for your pack.

thats what i was thinking but google returns a lot of hits claiming its voxels,
You could say it is voxel data being displayed via polygons, since it is a volumetric area of cubes instead of a landscape built by for example a heightmap.
i wish he could figure out a way to LOD out distant terrain. it seems tricky though..how would you lod out cubes. unless you make 4 cubes into 1 cube. i guess. then 16 into 1 for the next lod.
i dont think anybody can play with furthest distance set without crashing every 2 minutes no matter how powerful their system is. thats just wrong.

Since he batches it together, I'm not even sure how much you would gain in performance by running expensive algorithms to lod terrain, if anything at all.
I do wonder how much his texture-plotting routines cost though, since he seems to draw directly to textures with the fire, water, and compass for example.
00Zero, furthest distance works fine for me as long as I'm not playing online, not sure what's up with it crashing people playing multiplayer all the time, but maybe it's more of a network bug...
I'm running on full distance, with the best graphical settings. Only time i get lag is either when my internet is being used at the same time, or i fall down large drops (not sure why that is, perhaps it's trying to load chunks faster than normal?)
multiplayer or singleplayer?
i can run furthest distance in SP just fine. its the MP that keeps crashing.
I brought a couple friends and started to settle the northeast continent. Over the hills a bit north of someplace called 'Phones farm', on the western coast.
Our dock/basecamp is amateurish and crude next to all the awesome stuff near spawn
Man I wish Notch would include a system that lets you transfer your singleplayer content over to multiplayer. That way when a server is down you can play singleplayer and collect materials for later on.

But then the whole "never trust the client" would be out the window.
There has been talk about server portals though, to be able to travel between servers, that could help if one goes down.
doesn't sound that hard (in theory). just store player data in an online database that gets updated every time you log off. then you can just log in somewhere else and you have access to all your stuff.
ahh i found my place on the map,, straight north of spawn in the green, also someone posted in an earlier thread a more dynamic map screen shot, that let you zoom in a lot. can we get one like that with our server?
Hey guys, would anyone be opposed to me replacing some of the walkways near spawn with stone slabs so they're walkable but also boat-passable? The quickest way to my fort is by water and it'd be way more convenient.

I could go to bed, or I could continue hollowing out underground caverns of their dirt and gravel in order to discover more ore that I will only ever use to make more tools to continue hollowing out underground caverns, endlessly wondering why I’m doing it but completely unable to stop
For the first time ever a creeper scared the hell out of me. I was mining when I made an opening into a hidden cave. Nothing special in it but I wanted to know where I was in relation to the surface so I built some stairs and made a hole to the outside.
I popped my head out and a creeper came from nowhere but I only noticed it at the side of my screen. It's silent walking only made it more frightening as I swear I could hear my heart beating. In a panic I fell back and landed on the floor. It was coming close and was about to jump in with me but I managed to quickly seal it up.
Damn that was intense and the lesson? Don't peek out at night.
and possibly seasons (short cold winter nights long summer days) an extra layer of snow blocks covering the landscape after a snowfall, water table reducing in summer months etc

THAT would be awesome! Would love to see dead trees in the winder, and fresh leaves in the summer change over time :]

would also be kindof cool to have to plant certain crops in spring (gota be carefull not to make it too frustrating though and there would be no plus side to that only failed crops...
whatabout a level in the polar circle- eternal sunshine in summer (quick build a fort) then a winter of darkness

The intention is to make it seem like voxels even when it isn't.
Yay semantics.
I picked up Minecraft just before beta and have been using your texture pack from the get go, now if I only had more time to play...

ZacD, haha, didn't know that was you, I didn't have the guts to start up that thread :P

I was AFK at the collection point for a while. Came back to find a wooden axe and spade in my inventory. My trap now catches noobs....awesome!
Hahaha, improve it further, you could create an entire field full of pitfalls that channel unsuspecting players to the deathtrap

also. are you running the window max or windowed?
You sir, are an evil genius.

A server portal would be a fun idea and add to the immersion.
Meaning, if you could do stuff locally, unknowingly of the server, you can do pretty much anything you wish to.
It would make the dupe bug look harmless.
technically its super easy, but it just too prone to cheating and wouldn't be possible to stop either.
Imagine this: if mmo server let players store their character on their own computer.
.. so whats up with the server? i gettin the jitters
and this could be fun:
