Depending on when you bought it:
-Free updates for life if you bought it in Alpha
-Free updates til end of Beta if bought during Beta
-Bought after beta? tough luck - it's pretty much paid DLC
So I'll be having free updates until I turn into my grave.
I gave up to work on 32x32 textures and started 16x16 stylized and using original colour palette.
I'm not sure about the sand, I will have to work on it and try different possibilities.

Ouch, more fuel for the notch hate-squad.
This is not going to be pretty.
edit:
I'm betting it wont be dlc though, but that he'll start working on an expansion, dlc is way to fragmented to actually work for minecraft.
I like it. (The texture pack above.) The saturated grass is really good, don't change that. Is that wood? I think a trim of some sort is needed along the sides. Top is fine.
So I just bought Minecraft and had a look at the Polycount server. I'd tried the game a bit in single player back when there were some sort of server issues or something and Notch said "free weekend!" Other than that, though, I'm kind of clueless, so bear with the silly questions:
Are all the blocks on the PC server actually mined, or is there another way to get them?
When are you guys usually on the server? A 41 page thread is kind of daunting, so I'm not sure where to look.

Any specific tips for a Minecraft newbie?
in theory admins can spawn blocks, some blocks are duped but the biggest majority of it is mined.
im not sure if there are that many people actually playing on the server at the moment since it is pretty much bombed and many are sort of waiting for a map reset. should hopefully be sometime soon and the server should see a rise in activity again. at least mine
We will also change the license to remove the line that promises all future versions of the game for free. Please note that this change only affects people who buy the game after December 20, so if you got the game for during alpha, you will still get all future updates for free, despite this change. A promise is a promise.
So Updates/bug patches will be free to everyone, but not addons and expansion packs - these will be free to ALPHA members only

Yep, he did it because he promised everyone that the game and all additional content for it would be free until he stopped working on the game, so he keeps that promise for everyone who has bought it so far, and up to dec 20
Hey, how do I go about making a minecraft texture pack? I have all of the assets made, but I can't find a way to put them into the game without making the whole screen black for some reason.

Download my zipfile at www.eldpack.com and look at how it is structured, put your files in the same way in a zip and it will work.
I'm editing your pack's "terrain" file, then renaming the pack to test that out, but when I log on, it's just showing me a black screen. Is there a tutorial on this somewhere?
Edit: i found some

Maybe any mods you have installed are doing things?

Must be mods, I had the same problem, just remove the whole .minecraft folder, make sure to backup the texturepacks folder then launch minecraft.exe, it will re-download original files.
so does anyone still log on to the PC server? i havent been able to log in since SMP went online, and i was totally waiting for that update. and now thats its fixed i cant even play it. anybody know any other good servers with no griefers that i can join? send me a PM.
Started playing this a little over a week ago and slowly getting addicted even though I'm only experimenting with the basic stuff. Can't - stop - playing. Definitely appeals to me in the same way now as Lego did as a child. I think it taps into some deep human desire to make big stuff and create order on the planet.
Awesome stuff Eld. Your texture pack is great, but if you don't mind me saying... the dirt has a bit of a tiling thing going on that's never quite rubbed me the right way. It seems a little bit lumpy, and the highlights seem a bit off. Like I said though, it's more personal preference than anything else, but I thought I'd mention it anyway.

good feedback actually, and while its hard to avoid the tiling in minecraft, since there's no variation, you're right.
I've been working a bit on fixing the look of the dirt up, less bulgy, and I've also toned down the red as previously mentioned by others.
Well, I've finally taken the plunge and bought minecraft
Died once in the 2 hours I've had the game, managed to survive the night too holed up in my little cave- crafted my first pick axe as well, plus molested a few of the local wildlife :P
Once I get a spare chunk of time I'll see about joining the PC server
I play on another server... I built this giant floating spaceship that has just about everything you can imagine. Rooftop garden, pool, engines, cobblestone generator, indoor greenhouse, and even an indoor boat launch that shoots you out into the ocean. My most recent addition was two TNT cannons that fire off shots from my weapons platform, and it's sort of an internal installation that's been casted in obsidian. I set it up to target a small island where I built little cactus targets.
'lo and behold, I wake up this morning and find out someone has built a skyscraper directly in front of my ship, exactly where my cannons are targeted. Now I gotta figure out this whole dispute and relocate this guy so I don't vaporize the south side of his tower when I want to fire off some shots.

Think halloween-updated but with a bigger scope.
Yeah, I was using DLC as an example - I noticed you had to buy DLC's for most games, so I used it as an example
Better: gift codes are apparently going to be alpha tagged if bought before 20th.
So even if you sell these gift codes some time after, they'll be alpha-accounts (I think)

Nothing changes though, he went out to say that because people started believing that you'd have to pay for the final game after beta is over.
He means that you only have to pay for the full game of minecraft once, but expansions are not included.
Well, it's hard to give tips for minecraft, since it's all about you being creative :P

Updated grass, it tiles much better.
Fixed wooden boards they tile much better now
Desert biome, sand is now more darker.
Snow biome, the blocks covered in snow are more desaturated, I was surprised to see how they blend well with normal grassy blocks.
Edit:
Is there a way to change water colour? I tried with the texture, guess it's hard coded right?
Good progress!
The water is hardcoded, and only changeable via modding so far, not texture-pack supported.

Thank you divi.
Sounds like it's something about the way you recompress the zipfile, or the tool you use for it.

i agree
stop.
playing...
dear god this is addictive!
I've died several times now, built new shelters every time too as I thought the game resets itself when you die..... silly me...
ah well, I'm getting a feel for this now, I wonder if I can survive on under 6hrs sleep so I can play this some more?

Biome terrain MOD. Looks pretty sweet as well.

anyway, some more:
Yep that, I can lighten up that seam a bit and see if that works, but due to the fact that its all hard-shaded it'll still pop up ingame.
edit: just did, so now the seam might be gone, thanks for the feedback!
But it's a minor issue, I can live with that.
Anyway.., version 3.2 is out now, go fetch!

Makes me want to play minecraft again.
