Its a slime. I thought they were taken out but i guess not? It can push you but that's about the only thing it does. Sucks when your near a pit in a cave.
I wouldn't start making anything "Epic" till they iron out the kinks. Like any update it'll have some nasty shit in there.

I keep being too scared to play. I mean, I finally built up something that is a base of some sorts, but the day is so short that I didn't explore much yet, so basically all I do is mine some deeper, store my stuff in a chest, mine some deeper, store my stuff in a chest etc etc. :P. And I never play it for longer than half an hour because I become nervous about dying . crazy. (the first two games I tried i was killed by a green exploding dude, don't know what they're called).
And i'm still working with stone tools... Do you find the better stuff deeper down or something? (i've been playing a couple of realtime days).
yea. its buggy as f*** at the moment. ive crashed 4 in the last 2 hours. (ive never ever crashed in all the time ive played the previous version). and when you crash, sometimes you lose items, chests, furnaces (and everything in them). and when you load up the game again, it might spawn you in the ground, thus killing you and making you lose everything you had on your person. i dont think ill be playing this anymore until he fixes it (hopefully)
but i absolutely love the biome stuff. makes the previous version seem so...boring. the grass goes from green to less saturated, sort of brownish, then sand, then you get a lot of rocky outcrops, then it can go back to rolling green hills. its great. makes exploring much more gratifying.
hope he fixes the crashes though. i dont even get an error messages or anything, screen just turns black at random times.
havent tried the hell world yet. probably wont for a long time since i have to find diamond, then mine some obsidian. would take a long time.
once you do make a portal to hell though, it pretty much = free obsidian forever, because when you die in hell it makes a portal to where you died, and one at a relative point in the normal world.

I think that Notch said that the disappearing inventory on your "corpse" is a glitch that he plans on fixing. I sure hope so, anyway.

you find iron and then diamond. Gold is worthless from what I've read so I just use it for armor. Diamonds are hard to find for me Today had a creeper in my base. Fun times...also if you're on fire and die does everything disappear?
The Nether is so scary! Those big ghast things are creeeepy. So are the packs of Pigmen that just stare at you... I like the idea of mining Stalactites from the ceiling though. Gotta be careful or you fall to your death like I did.
The new bugs make the game unplayable. Unaware of the bug, I went into play the game earlier and lost all of my valuables. I thought maybe it wasn't a bug because it took me a long time to get back to my body, and then I lost another round of diamond equipment... I now have nothing and monsters are suddenly spawning everywhere in my mines.
I also had an issue where it would crash every time after logging in. I had to delete my .minecraft folder to fix.
I am pretty frustrated with the release right now. The new bugs are overshadowing the new features.
It's too bad Notch has to rush and can't just take his time on stuff because some of the fanbase is so childish.

A tip for those fighting though all the bugs to play atm. Press escape often to force a Save. Also, If there is a problem with save points getting lost or wiping themselves. I'd probably backup the saved files in the minecraft saves folder if you do anything worth keeping.
Man, the difficulty seems to be ramped all to hell with the new update. Playing on normal, I'm literally besieged by enemies once I step outside at night. Trying to make it across any sort of distance overland at night (without armor, anyway) is literally suicide.
That inventory loss bug has been there for a while. Before it only happened after random deaths deep underground. Now its all over the place. I downloaded an inventory editor and keep track of my valuables so that when I die I just Hack my Inv back. Its not cheating if its a bug I'm working around!

@ZacD: Programmers with time on their hands that have a love of the Google maps API and an understanding of minecraft's file format. I'm told that its broken in the latest release, but the ultimate goal is to have each marker represent each active minecraft player on the server.
Im not sure how I feel about the portal system, it seems like there isn't much practical use, you can't really control where you start and end, and for for a large section of area, there's only 1 exit/entrance the game uses, and you you build anymore, it just uses those 2, I haven't had enough time to figure out how the height plays into the portals.
