Please don't let this be the 2nd consecutive year with NO Keynote video footage whatsoever. What the hell is wrong with people... Still not even an audio file yet
This game just gets better and better, and I just get inspired everytime I see it. I can't wait! In my opinion this might crown the most beautiful environments.
Wait, I just watched the video on Kotaku (I assume it's the same that's posted above), and they were painting directly on the environment. That's vert painting, right? What is going on there? Does the megatexture tech allow them to create new textures on that fly in the environment? How is it defined? I mean is it linked to a specific object? Or can you paint on multiple objects at the same time?

Here is a (rather old) video demoing some of the megatexture content creation tools. That was a few years ago, but it gives you a good idea of how the tools work.
Thanks for posting that Slum! I had not seen how these various textures and meshes were actually being applied to the terrain. That's really amazing how you are able to layer these different textures and stamps.
LOL the mayor from subway town is voice by the Colonel from Metal Gear! Would recognise him anywhere.
The NPC dialogue animation is still so so bad though. Shocking. And the first flamethrower guy takes five rockets without his gas canister blowing up, but some buckshot does the trick for the second guy? Even Killzone 2 got the flamethrower guys right...
Apart from the whole 'downloading side missions as and when you discover them' bullshit.
"Oh hey, I found a vault! - now to sit and wait for three hours whilst I download the level so that I can actually open the door and see what's down there!".

Thats actually not quite right. When you buy the game new, you get a code to download the sewer missions. If you buy the game used, that code is used up and you pay for it online. Either way, its one download that you unlock whenever.
It's better that this is not the case (however it's still not good). In fact it's terrible. Parts of the States and small parts of Europe have a good broadband infrastructure (for example, the UK still does not, and represents a very significant market). The rest of the world doesn't. If these files aren't small, then you're basically going to be restricting a portion of the already paid for singleplayer game geographically.
I feel sorry for 360 owners outside of the Live service area who will not be able to play a portion of the game that they have already paid for.
Yeah, but to be fiar theres the chance that these are already on the DVD. Lets not forget these are planned as part of the game and are NOT additional DLC in the traditional sense. It really wouldn't shock me if all you were paying for (Or getting free if bought new) was a simple unlock code.
It wouldn't be the first game to do this, or indeed the last.
It's not how most of the media has been reporting it.
Yeah it is, Kotaku reported it how slum said.
Also, I believe Odium is correct. That is typical practice these days. In fact, I just bought Street Fighter III on PSN, and the 'download' was only a few kilobytes as I already had the demo installed. The whole game was on my HDD, just not 'unlocked'. Pretty clever in most cases, shitty beyond belief in the case of Resident Evil 5 and its payed multiplayer 'DLC'.
Someone on the Breaking Bad crew is a gamer, first they have the meth heads debating which zombie game is the best, then the intro to this week's episode has
Pinkman playing Rage with some light gun accessory...? I'm assuming this is an inaccuracy, unless they plan to have PS3 Move support...

eh, isnt that more like the ONLY cases? :P I havent heard of more than those that you mentioned. Also, i get so pissed everytime gamers are like "The dlc should be on the disc, greedy devs blah blah" Cant we just go out and tell them like it is? That most DLC is made AFTER the game is done, but that it takes a good while from the point where the team stops working on the team until it hits the shelves? :P Its not like DLC is cut from the game itself in 99% of the cases.
Kotaku does whatever Kotaku feels like depending on which side of the fence they're on. Normally they'd drop a two-line bomb designed to aggravate as many people as possible. I wouldn't use them as an example of reporting.
This isn't post-launch content though. This is content that is being made ready from day one..
Yeah, but read what I wrote again :P What I was arguing against was people saying it was "typical practise these days" when in fact its pretty uncommon. And post-launch content can be ready from day one, and still couldnt be on the disc... I just get annoyed because I understand random retarded gaming forums not understanding how things actually work, but considering this forum has so many professionals I just think people would know better
This is pretty cool, neat little incentive to keep people from buying used. I'd love to see how this works out for them, if its successful maybe we'll see more of it in the future.
Especially with mostly single player games everyone except for gamestop is probably losing tons of money from used sales. This seems like a good way to combat that, if you bought the game used you still get the main storyline, but all the side quests are locked, if you bought it new then everything is available to you. From the developer's standpoint thats a really great idea.
Ofcourse next thing you'll hear would be gamestop pulling these codes out of unopened brand new game boxes, and people who downloaded a warez copy from the internet complaining that they can't access the extra content...
No, that's the point. He was complaining that people without decent internet connections cannot access DLC like the sewers in Rage. Except they can, cause its on the disc and doesn't require an extra large download, just a download a few kilobytes big. Again, RE5 is the exception in this, not providing the multiplayer free was a dick move.

I can pretty much guarantee you that the pirated copy will include the content.
Yep, on PC at least, I give it maybe an hour tops before the subway content shows up.
Dues Ex was recently released online BEFORE its date. Its DLC bonus that you get from certain shops was ALL available. It was cracked pretty much an hour after release. And then when the update hit Steam, it was already floating around on torrents and newz sites...
That means the game, DLC, crack AND update were all ready on par time with the legit copy.
This only changes things to honest customers who don't pirate on CONSOLE, but will sometimes buy new.
I echo what has been said across the entire thread. Take as a whole, the game visual looks great and the gameplay from the videos seems tight and focused. With that said. It's just another FPS. Borderlands had the Diablo thing going for it. Fallout had the rpg/45 hour gameplay going for it. Call of Duty has the multiplayer. What does Rage seem to do that sticks out? Look pretty? I am skeptical.
Also, I think gamers should just get used to post launch DLC being made at the same time as the regular game. It is where the industry is at.
well it never pretended to offer anything else than 'more of the same - and exceedingly well'. I think the let down is ppl's expectations from id-soft, which generally rise as competition does.
I don't know, iD have been doing pretty well in the past to meet and surpass expectations. Doom 3 was pretty damned impressive when it arrived and was by no means a weak title.
I feel the same way Zac. a lot of people are downplaying it because it's 'just another fps', or their eyes somehow suck and can't see how gorgeous it looks. After watching their 45 minutes of gameplay at PAX last year I was sold instantly, it just looked FUN. and I think that's where it's going to succeed.
fun > whatever 'been done' excuses people use.
if the gunplay and level design are solid, I'm in, no questions. because sure, there's a lot of FPS these days, but not many of them are great.
Has id mentioned how long the critical path of this game is going to be? Or what we may expect? I really wanna play this...but I don't think I have the time.. Especially with Dark Souls coming out.

Fucking awesome.
eheh, yeah, It's usually the other way around! :P
Haven't had a chance to soak it up yet, just thought I'd drop the link to the keynote here.

All the games you mentioned use idtech4, which it will be free soon.
(And I mean the engine, not the art assets, levels, textures, etc, obviously they wont release that, that's not the point)
Hmmm. Wow! That's awesome.

No. Only Doom 3.
the world looks just so detailed and awesome! and John Goodman rocks!
New gameplay vid.

Still gonna love it probably.

Didn't know people still used Dial-up! :O

Gnnaargh. This and region exclusive content are the worst things to happen to games, ever

So awesome.
Also, I've tarted to build a semi-comprehensive modding resource at mixomracing.com (I plan to expand this on release of tools)
Here's some giant screenshots I put up via google maps api (my host is a bit slow for this)

on snap

Borderlands was fun, but really repetitive, you only get 1 good play through out of it, but loved the bosses and the big open area.
Fallout to me always felt like Oblivion 1.5, it feels dated and pretty much plays like elder scroll games with guns.
fun > whatever 'been done' excuses people use.

with you on that 100%
Gonna be great, just need to find a way to slow down time. ^^
