Silent heroes sometimes work, being a fps, you are the character, so having the character talk is sometimes weird. 3rd person games work better with dialog, unless you wanna start talking about dialog options like oblivion.
Sometimes they do, but it has to be very well done to pull off, AKA Gorden Freeman.
Problem with RAGE, is that people ask you questions, wait a second and then start speaking again as if you had answered. That instantly takes me out of the experaince because I think, I didnt answer, or I wouldn't answer like that.
Thats what Valve did so well, they didnt have those moments if I recall. When they asked questions they would be like, Hey Gorden could you pull that switch over there? If you said No in real life you wouldnt pull the switch, if you wanted to make it like you said Yes you would.
IDK maybe its just me. But I think if you are not going to let the character talk then you should give them options to choose what to say if you want it too feel like your the character.

Nailed it, thank you.
I think Rage could and would be much better if the character used the Suck-Sink-Punch formula followed by a Jades Trick or two.
For example, want to go to the Grand Canyon? You can't go there (due to papers and such or status) unless you go the Dead City and get something for the crazy guy, who will get you 'favors'.
The way the speech would go is that simply put, you can dick around all you like, but you won't be able to continue your journey unless you do this 'certain' favor.
In HL, you're a respected and revered scientist who tested his mettle, so people help you for that reason. In RAGE, you're an Arkist survivor, people will ask you to help THEM because you're a nobody and everyone is trying to survive.
It's a pity if they squander such a chance for cheaper gimmicks where characters talk all day long, nod, then talk some more, without giving me the feeling that I'm screwed over if I don't do what they say.
TBH the interior lighting aint that good IMO might be the compression on that last video but it looks a bit overly contrasty in the shadowed areas too saturated and too warm...just a little meh
why? looks kind of like the Maya hotbox which is a PC UI concept. If you noticed, the pick up/interact icon that flashes on screen says "e" so that's the PC version being shown off.
hm, if that vid was on pc then they were using a 360 controller to play it
was that the quake 1 ammo-pickup sound at the end?? major coolage!!!
also - the sawed-off shotgun was awesome, and the explosive-darts that get stuck into ppl and they freak out
having played dead space 2 recently, this game looks too much easy tho

those are mind control darts, they let you control the enemy for a short time before detonating him/it
I can't wait to get my hands on this game. I know it might not be bringing a lot of new gameplay to the table, but sometimes it's good to just be able to do stuff you're used to doing, and have it look ever so pretty.
Looking good... I feel we should be past this ham-fisted 'story via NPC dialogue' shtic though ... the NPC's sound part-labotomised; they just jump right into it. Nice weapon models though.
Is it me, or did the animation of the NPC quest giver feel...overacted in physical movement? But the Pinkies snack was the turning point for me, sooooo going to get it.
Yeah, the NPC animation are quite a letdown. Their sound treatment is weird too, as if they were, hum, talking in a quality microphone inside a recording studio ... (instead of feeling outside, I mean)

Gameplay looks awesoooooome! Can't wait!
Yeah I forgot about that! Sounded like the video was a cam version!
Yeh, the NPC that gives you the quest, whats up with his tongue...seriously.
but why the hell does all the voice aciting sound so....proper? like commercial voices or something (allstate dude) . even the mutants speak properly. what gives?
Not amazed by some of the texture resolutions, but still looking forward to cruising through all the lavish environments on some decent PC settings. Also digging a lot of the enemy animations and deaths. Definitely more fun in this regard than most other games even if Rage as a whole seems a little thin on gameplay innovation. Worth it for the art and animations though!
Okay, the game is gorgeous, but am i missing something guys? The gameplay looks boring and dated as hell. An awful lot EXACTLY like turok 2 or something. 2-3 melee focused enemies trudging at you at a time, a couple of samey weapons and a crossbow... This is not picking up the ageless quake vibe at all to me, and i just did co-op runs of q1/q2 a few weeks ago.
Played it for a while today. I was pretty impressed! I had high hopes going into and I was not disappointed at all. I played the level which the giant guy (pictured above) and it was a ton of fun. Awesome weapons and great graphics (although I was playing it on 360 and there were quite a few LOD issues)
John Carmack always renews my faith in gaming's future. He looks at things in ways I never thought of, and is great at explaining why a technology is good or bad idea. He might be the only person on the planet who COULD convince me the WiiU is a good idea (not saying he's said anything on it, just saying if anyone could convince me, it's him).

that hexagon pattern is becoming the 2010's lens flare but it's well used here
Fire up Doom 1: iD invented the hexagon!
Mind telling me where it is in the video? Didn't see it.
