It's the famous quote of J. Robert Oppenheimer, a guy who worked developing the atomic bomb.
I'm actually surprised nothing like that came up in fallout 3 (or maybe i havent played through it enough. )
Thanks for the support guys, gonna fix the floating feet and show a new beauty shot soon, wanna work on a cool background, but if i cant get it done in time, i will go with the last image.
edit:
hah, nice it embedded by default, love these forums.
time is running short so im probably gonna go with the above image for the beauty shot
i have a strange craving to put a Hindenburg in the background, heh.
edit:
i have edited the post with all the images bundled to show the new presentation pic, feet our on the pedestal and gave it a bit more shape as clee suggested!
I vote totally yes for the new pedestal, but is that some texture stretch I spot on some of the bricks?
I get some WWII vibes of it as well.
Hate to be a pain but if you got a tiny bit of time over, wouldn't it be cool if he was about to grab the flag, since he's flagrunner and all?
Just my 2 cents. I guess you already know by now how much I admire this! Well now you know anyway.
Congratulations and it will be fun seeing this piece on the top 20.
EDIT: Oh, and by the way. What 3dpackage and renderer are you using? Just curious.
Beauty shot looks great! I like how you did use a hint of dark orange in the background. I was hoping for a painted environment with war-torn battlefield with flames that would give off the warm colors, but this is still nice. That pedestal is looking alot better too now that you beveled out parts of the surface. Awesome job man. Congrats on the finish. Good luck!
If you do get a tad more time, it might be worth playing with the 2d backdrop a bit. While it's not bad by any means he does blend into the neutral tone just a little. Perhaps give it more of a blue-green caste to seperate it from the yellow-ish colours of the robot guy.
amazed everytime I look at this thread, deffo my fave.
for the beauty shot I just think his right hand doesn't stand out too well when you have the his leg and the similar colour of the brick wall filling the space between them.
thanks, fixed the little stretch with a couple more bricks.
about the flag, see the next pic, and after i will explain why im a bit iffy.
oh, and i just used max scanline, then a bit of post in photoshop (the clouds, a little 'sunray' and a blurred layer of the model behind the pic to give it a little fake bloom, nothing huge though.
@ clee,
yeah, i wanted an entire war going on in the background too, but im just not that good of an artist, heh, environments aren't really my thing, though i can 'almost' see what would be going on in the back.
notable problems with this approach:
-The character is a bit small to fit it all in, rotating the flag counter clockwise doesn't really help, it just looks stupid
-Too much free space in the image from the above ^
-Could possibly be disqualified as something the character "uses" , i would have liked to put this into the original model but i just don't have the texture space.
-Doing it at the normal size but cutting off the flag from the image looks a bit iffy.
Aren't his arms too long?
Just kidding
Your entry is my favorite.
Don't need to cross fingers for you.
I think you're top three "The fingers in the nose"
like we say in France (means "easily" --> Don't need
both hands to clear a difficult task).
Iff you win this year, please don't take part
in DomWar5 for I wan't to win once
Well enough stupid jokes.
Cheers!
Hm, I think the flag might be a problem. You could just nail the pole on the ground and fill up the empty space behind him. Deform it a bit to make it look like it's a bit windy.
Also I can't shake of the feeling that he's standing dangerously close to the edge of the pedestal. Perhaps moving him slightly backwards?
i don't think its like he's hanging over a cliff so im ok with it, shows a bit more of the feet too.
filled up some space with another pic from the right side:
i read through the beauty shot guidelines i don't think it will be a problem, it literally says you can throw anything in there, even other characters, if anyone else could confirm this it would be great! if not i'll email Fred.
edit:
unless anyone cant spot any massive flaws i'm gonna submit that as final now, don't wanna leave it until the last minute and keep picking at it until its ruined altogether
Oh sorry, I was thinking of the presentationshot. :P
I think I liked when there was only one though. Feels like the image gets too busy right now.
I like the new pose better though. Perhaps keeping it and have a faded out closeup on the chest area in the background?
Looking awesome. I like that smoke effect you got going back there. I also like the composition and the new pose of the right side one better. And I actually like that its standing close to the edge making it look tense. Id say stick with presenting one of it in the image, and preferrably the one on the right.
well, i've submitted finals now, a bit late for that but overall i am happy with the image. i didnt want to submit it at the last second, and im confident in the last image before i start picking at everything.
A huge thank you to everyone who has given me support and criticism during the development of this character, and for the inspiring work others have done for this competition. Best of luck to everyone else!
now i can get back to other work...an agreement that this competition has put off for about a month, LOL!
Really great work, it's been nice to see this go from start to finish. Good luck in the judging - but either way, you have a killer portfolio piece, should you need it
By the way, don't wanna sound like a douche or anything, but has anyone received their prizes yet? I'm not in any rush or anything, just curious, has been a long while, maybe i should contact Fred?

@ clee,
noted!
i'm gonna be doing it again to fix the floating feet so i'll take another pass at that.
Nothing more to say...

You really should have green light to get into top 10 with it!

These forums and this competition fucking rules, if it weren't for these i'd be on a street corner selling crates and lens flare.
And again, congrats to everything that made it!
lol...
I get your url from the low poly section with your little barrel character. And my brain get finally sick!
Anyway good work here, my feel about your work is quite impressive.
Let challenge it again with the same one but less than 500 poly!
Thanks, little strange how this was dug up, heh.

oh i would do that
