Just started on this dragon 15 minutes ago. It's based on Haku from Spirited Away, here's the ref and crappy sketch. It's also in time for chinese new year so I figured I'd combine the two:
Read the Earthsea quartet last week haha!
Always imagined him, more regal and with a tad bit of native american in him
Excellent work though!
well i think earthsee is one of their weakest movies, not because of the art but because of the lack of story, they started the movie right in the middle, without any introductions and left you there with that strange ladylord/lordlady evil thingie, which in german was also spoken by a woman, which made the whole thing very confusing.
I wanted to read the story as well, so maybe the movie then makes more sense.
Ok, done with this for now, not great, but fun, need to learn how to use poly paint in zbrush, painted this in sculptris really slap dash, had to decimate quite heavily to get it to load the .obj.
really shouldn't spend all my time making low poly stuff
Teriyakistyle - cheers man, yea I tried to youth her up a bit haha. I think it works alot better. Your dudes looking really cool, I like the little vidya the blink at the start made me double take haha.
Jinsuen - thats a really cool sketch, I like the shapes you've got
the_rabid_Rabbit - looking good, its like a realistic porco
Guedin - love it man, you really captured the style
Nightflarer - haha, theres not enough Cat buses in here, great style!!!
Dchung - love your yubaba haha, I really like the clothwork, you captured her perfectly
brwnbread - haha they are great, look straight out of the movie
mister - great start keep at it and you are sure to improve
heres my San, I ran out of time really but oh well haha
I must have been living under a rock because I'd never heard of Ghibli until this week. Thought I'd have a go anyway Pretty challenging trying to capture anime in a sculpt but here's my effort.
it seems i am a bit late ! but any way here is final render of my Turnip Head , rendered in zbrush 4r5 with 3d posterization! i really like this new feature !
Darksiders always struck me as too offensively juvenile to make fan art for, so I tried to subvert its style by imagining what would happen if Vigil had applied the same sort of stylisation to its women as it did to its men. Because that's totally the mature thing to do.
I'll see if I get some time for sculpting next week. For all my dislike of skulls, I'm in admiration of the interesting use of hard edges in Darksiders's sculpts and I would like to learn a thing or two about it.
zwebbie: Your poor choice of words makes me cringe
what isnt stylized about that maker woman in the middle? it has exactly the same amount of stylization that the males got, maybe a bit smoother but still a comparable amount, also a lot of the other female characters had armors with the stylized shape language of the game
if you stylize a female the same way as a male you end up with an unappealing butch looking female design, yours is already showing that because of the broad shoulders and overly accentuated features. a better example would be piors sculpt if you really want a good balance between flat surfaces and female shapes
Also before this turns into another sexism in female character design thread, please don`t ,not saying you where planning to but it seems to be the hot new issue around here these days

And I tried so hard in my choice of words to balance my obvious personal dislike of Darksiders with a sarcastic self-loathing so that I wouldn't sound smug at least. Words...
Anyway, I'm as adamant as you are in keeping this an art thread and not letting it devolve into a sexism thread, but I'd like to think that stylisations and proportions can fall into the former category as well; what poor artists we'd be if we didn't think about such things for fear of being political!
Now if you think the females in your example are just as stylised as the men in that picture are, any discussion ends right here and right now; because I see women that have their eyes about halfway up their head, whereas the men have theirs at three quarters hight; I see woman whose hand length is a fair bit too big in relation to their face to be realistic, next to men whose hands are thrice as big; quite frankly, I think those and other women in Darksiders are stylised, but men are grotesque.
And so I wondered what were to happen if I drew a woman as grotesquely as I find the men in Darksiders to be. To be honest, I was rather surprised at the result myself.
Zwebby: I'd take a look at the work of Joe Mad to see how we would have stylized a female. Here is a good example:
Thanks, BoBo, but it was kind of the point to not adhere to the regular style; instead, I looked at the design of Death for Darksiders 2 and imagined what I'd think a female counterpart to that design would look like if I hadn't ever seen any of Joe Mad's work ever before; the answer certainly wasn't that she'd have enough body fat to be defined by curvy breasts and hips!
Hey guys! This was not exclusively made for the art jam but as I'm doing an darksiders inspired environment anyway, I thought this might fit pretty well.
The pillar is based on a concept of Jonathan Kirtz.
I still can't get my head arround the fact that darksiders didn't make it and won't be taken further. It's a shame.

I just used Zbrush bpr render passes and put them together in photoshop, most of it is my polypaint on a flat shader though.

So it stuck in my subconscious to take part in the darksiders jam... sadly I forgot that and doodled without much thought.
Lesser Horned Baul Chinian Dragon.
