Not like it's a big deal, but are these highlighted points seams on the normal map? Looks like they're caused by having smoothing group breaks where the UV doesn't break.

yea i hate that
didnt know how to fix it when i worked on the m4
Looks like you've been playing with dDo a bit? But this looks killer
heh yea i took a layer from it O_O
Thanx guys
funny how i though 10K polys would be ALOT when i did it, now 10K isnt cutting it
next weekend ill add more stuff on it, i think its same to spend another 5-10K polys on it and still make it up to the standards today

considering the current timeline on this, id agree 5k tris is insignificant but it's worrying to think what the total production time will be + significant revisions.
honestly 10k goes a long way. no matter what the object is, you ALWAYS redesign sections of the object to look the same/similar while doing it in a way that saves triangles. you only throw more geo at it when the bake needs it or when you can't redesign the high poly to save.
in this case the model has not been redesigned to save tris at all and is wasteful, and that's a bigger issue.
depends on what u call waste, all parts on the gun are functional, the scope can be flipped and the iron signt can pop up, its all fully modeled
besides i like my stuff round, i have sensitive eyes and i cant be fooled with good bake, no matter how good it ism at certain angle u will see the poor geometry
this is a 10k with all the attachments, next gen will be aROUND 20K assume
1. prominent silhouette, not enough sides.
2. you could easily redesign this to save tris.
3. complete waste of tris to have these modeled. the pull tab indents could be fattened up and pulled closer together, then baked down. doing both of these would save a LOT of geo. same on the top rail cover.
4. prominent silhouette, not enough sides.
5. prominent silhouette, not enough sides.
6. also a complete waste of tris to have the delta ring details modeled and doesn't look good.
7. huge seam. sorry i just can't unsee this.
8. you can easily change the design here and bake these screws in to the main scope mount mesh.
9. um, is the hole above the rounded screw seriously modeled in? there's a lot of redesign in this area that could easily save a lot of tris while looking almost identical.
10. LOTS of seams and not enough sides. this is right in your face in FPV.
11. not enough sides
12. completely useless details modeled in. lower these into the holes and bake them in.
13. bake this in to the main body
14. grip could be combined in with the main receiver to save tris and make life easier all around. it would also look better since it would line up correctly with the side of the receiver.
show me your wireframe and i can do more detailed feedback if you want. optimizing the design means you have an easier time making the low poly, unwrap, and texture, which means you can crank out better looking art faster. why would you not care about that? also i just noticed, there's no pictures of the other side of the gun. did you only make this one side of the gun?
there's bake seams all over the model but you seem to have acknowledged this in the thread before. the hawken bakes in your portfolio are better, so i guess i'm just not sure why you would want to continue reviving something from 2011 every four months when you could make something new and show off what you've learned?
redesign does not mean removing details, just making them more efficient. it does not remove any functionality.
12 could stay since it's real close to the camera but 8-9 can be greatly optimized.
i'm sure it's a lot easier to make a new attachment and bump a two year old thread every 4 months than making something new to show off any new skills you've learned, but tacking on attachments won't help when there are fundamental issues with the base asset. but hey, your choice.
I won't talk about all the points cause I'm in no position to debate them...
But from a spectator point of view 8-9-12 needs to stay like they are, it's just not the same when they are baked in, it adds a lot i think.
so yeah...anyway! Good job as usual You should definitly to some sort of timelapse video like someone else said.
It is the same when they are baked in if you do it properly. Racer isn't talking about taking details out. He talks about using tris in a more efficient way to achieve the same result.
You just can't bake #9 for example right in the model with it looking the same, you need to change it...What I meant is that part sticking out is what I like about it.
I am doing good. Actually got into modeling/texturing again as of recent. Doing lowpoly/oldschool assets for Augmented Reality every now and then. When i actually get the time i wanna give that whole current gen stuff a try. About time... :P

edit: damn, too late!
u cant bake popped out screws and i dont wanna redesign it to be inside.
if u look at the aimpoint mount, the screws are baked. i want popped out details on closer parts, its my way of doing my art
the other side have to top reciver details modeled, and again the magnifier can be flipped down
sand saving 50 polys on screws wont do shit on a 10k gun anyway

This is all debatable. There are so many things to take in account such as is it first person or 3rd person, how often you'll see the gun and is it's purpose for a cinematic etc. I agree with lonewolf were about to hit next gen and there is also a PC standard. BUT overall if its personal/portfolio work i don't think it matters aslong as its efficient. Assets can always be reduced.
my 2 cents, give me back the change if you don't like it. LOL

btw
thanx , just to make it clear, this M4 isnt the one from MW3, it was done after the game was released and was inspired by the MW3
i think i talked about the specs here few time, check all the thread
Looks groovy, great work!
and yeah the idea of dpadam450 is nice, would be great if u could do that. or a downsized diffuse map would be great, too.
i also made a custom m4 and this gun has so many parts, that the uvw map gets quite crowded.
Edit: No... She´s damn Awesome!
yea i hate that
didnt know how to fix it when i worked on the m4
maybe ill fix it sometime later
Thanx for the feedback guys
its all in the thread
How did you fix this?
Hi Lonewolf. Please help locate You M4 model ! Where is it? :P
was spray painting the M4 on the weekend O_O
Looks like you've been playing with dDo a bit? But this looks killer

10k not enough wat
why not make something new?
10k isnt that much no? ^^ 15k is quite a bit though, on currentgen (xb360/ps3) but for PC its not much at all : )
just saying

but most of the times it does too
you have gonna be holding it 100% of the time
you will never see it
dude how you doing??

you basically killed half of the details by redesigning stuff, im always looking to get more details in my work not take off
not my way, and ill say it again, those parts are functional
the 15k version will have rounder sides and maybe another attachment or 2

also, is the other side of the gun really not modeled?
