A magazine. There's kind of been some discussion regarding the possibility Valve might not let the Engi have a straight revolver because the animation for reloading it would have to be different, so the current iteration is modified to include a magazine.
What is that under the barrel, a battery? If yes, I like it! Just add some wires to it and it'll be perfect!
Actually it's a clip. He's trying to make it be able to use the original pistol animations by making it look like the engineer modified it to use a clip instead of loading the barrel.

Aww, too bad, the battery idea would fit right in wit the Engie. Wait a minute, then the revolver will have clip AND a cylinder, that's kinda silly. I think you should make some custom reload animations for this beauty.

Animations are allowed, and are to be submitted separately, with instructions in the "Anything else we should know" part of the submission saying what item it is for.
It's basically a skin contest, so no, it's not. You have to get it to workaround the current animations. However, passive items like the Targe probably would be allowed since their entities are very similar to hat models.
If a friend wants to do custom animations for your submissions, have them submit it through the TF2 Contribute! page and note that it is for your Polycount Pack entry.
So I'd imagine if a friend can submit his animations, you can submit your own.
so after messing with this thing more I've started not to like the attachment. I'm digging the old revolver version now. I think with the sam&max update they had revolvers so I should be fine.
The canister is pepper spray. Not sure if its a keeper, I just wanted to add something silly. "Mann Co pepperspray / mouth wash"
they look great. i'd go for 5, with or without the pepper spray.
did you try a slighty rounded magazine once? or add some sort of rim at the bottom, so it gets a little more character?
Two seems like the winner hear to me. A barrel that short would make for not the most accurate gun in the world, but seeing as it's a revolver it's power would make up for it.
I also don't think Engie would run around with the Peace Maker you've got there.(1)
The attachment is distracting from an otherwise beautiful model. I say cut it.
EDIT:
And as for the name BIGTEX I think it being small is amusing, like the 'Cricket' form MIB.
just so no one thinks this thing is big enough, its pretty huge.
They're silly. The spy's pistol is a huge-ass gun to begin with, it's a friggin' .42 if not a .44 or .45. it doesn't need to be dwarfed in every dimension for the engi gun to still be a big-ass revolver.
Up-close, the screw seems a little much, but that's probably because it's been scaled up with the rest of it.
The star is a nice touch though, I think. Of the ones you've shown, I'm still most partial to #2.
ok, going to tackle the mallet first in texture since its pretty damn easy. Layed out the uvs, baked some AO and layed down some base colors. Any seams, like on the handle I'll just fix it in 3dcoat later. . For now heres the final game mesh.
I like the revolver, it's nice and simple and fits well with the engie's existing weapons. Besides since there's so much time left in the competition you could always come back and try out a few extra engie modifications once you've finished.
Thanks for taking my earlier idea into consideration btw. :poly136:
Looks great oobersli. I think it would look more interesting if you increased the contrast between the material of the handle and the head, similar to the basic diffuse materials that are applied to the earlier version of the model. Also the angle of the shaft as it extends out from the grip seems kind of strange, it makes it seem broken almost. http://img265.imageshack.us/img265/5682/ooberslihammer.jpg
ya, getting a fresh look at it a couple hours after i notice they're a bit too close in contrast. I'll make sure to put that on my to-do list after vacation. thanks.
@dickless - I'm actually surprised i got these done so quickly, so perhaps I'll have some time to come back with more stuff.
had a bit of time to make some tweaks before the day starts. i don't want to make the chrome-ish metal too bright, just up'd the contrast a tad and straightened out the handle some.
man your stuff is turning out awesome, i missed the huge update you did with the revolver, but seeing your end result i think its great. top notch and the mallet looks nice. only thing id say on that is the part between the grip and the head look a bit too dark or grimy.
I honestly think you should fall back to the Revolver, stamp that stock on, that was a nice tack on and preserving weapon function is an important part of this contest, I'd play it safe and go that route. Also reflecting back now, the Big Mean Mother Hubbard has a very plain look to it at the moment, maybe it's just because I haven't seen it in-game yet, but you may want to give it one last look. Besides that though everything seems ready to present. But I think you should test it all in-game, see if there's any major clipping with these babies.
ya, i've fixed that, no need to post an image of the change though. I pulled back the funk a little bit so its not tooo exaggerated but enough to fit tf2.
almost done with the bmmh uv's now. hard to get anything done when theres so much bbq and swimming to do on such an awesome weekend. There shouldn't be any clipping at all since I built them pretty much on top of the original models for scale. It looks plain with the max materials, promise I'll give it some mother love in the texture.
Just an idea for a little quirk, the bottom of the hammer reminded me of a bottle opener. Even though the Engie is seen drinking from cans of beer, I'm sure he couldn't pass up a stubby (if you were to tweak it a tiny bit)
If I were you, I'd experiment a bit with the grey colours on the Big Bang; making the rubber a little warmer and the metal a little colder, for example. Not sure if it'd work, but it might pop out the difference in material a bit better.
I admire the simplicity you have in these models; a lot of replacements go a bit overboard with details.
I'll have to mess with the big bang textures tomorrow since I left the orignal psd on my other computer. For now I got the uvs finished and baked the AO for hubbard. I still need to add the needle for the pressure gauge, didn't want it to bake in the AO incase i can make it animated.

Also make it more unique when compared to the revolver.

I'm pretty sure that's how it would reload it would swing out on the screw?

but same as nrek said, the angle of the shaft could/should be fixed a bit. too much zickzack for my taste

i like the bolt on top of the mallet.
