400 pages of basic knowledge, should prove useful. Found it randomly in the uni libary, lol - i was looking for Bukowski and got lost in the art department. Going to be educational two weeks.
For the sake of posting already, il add a sketch of an airtrooper.
think your facial proportions are a little off there samgriffiths. The forhead to top of skull is massive, eyes feel really close together, the shape of the face just feels off.
samgriffiths, you need to look at wrinkles on shirts a little better, especially on the armpits. some of the folds dont make sense...theyre going the wrong direction and seems over done. and ditto with moose as well on proportions
@racer445: your stuff is fantastic, this piece is no different.
@skudz: i like the over all design but aesir is right on the money, i think even a simple change like this would help?
I've been doodling this thing out though its not finished yet.
I think its been done a number of times, anyone know the original artist so I can give credit where its due?
Character I'm working on for my Senior Film next year. Base mesh created using Nurbs+Lattice deformers, converted to polygons and sculpting it in Maya low poly then applying a smooth. Never used Nurbs before, ever, and I like how it works paired with a lattice
Tail ridges are being redone, and haven't touched the legs or toes either (as you can tell, :P)
Loved your entry to the competition, beartraps, good luck!
Feel a little ashamed to post my stuff here because the other 2D art I've seen in this thread is completely badass. I was involved in the same competition that beartraps was, albeit in the concept section and not the character modeling section.
Disregard the image headers, I'm just linking the images straight from my website.
There is long thread at http://www.tinyurl.com/shermanEvolve that shows all of my work in progress ever since the start of the comeptition back in October (4 months!)
Spacecraft art created by me for the awesome indie game "Nebulas and Cannons" soon to be released from Crispy Bacon Games

I clicked through to the site but couldn't find any high-res screens of these in action, look great though, does the game just use these converted to sprites , would be cool to see the 3d used somehow, will they animate?
Tonights doodle - proportions are way off, but hopefully recognisable.
The teeth on those random gears are like, so small it'd render a weapon totally prone to failure and ridiculously difficult to make... Plus, they'll just turn to noise at any reasonable distance from the camera. I suggest upping the scale of the teeth.
Anyway, the arma2 engine is actually really nice to make previews in

just a quick sketch I made, may enter the mini over at GA with it
in-engine:
comparison to the original art:
Just add a few turbosmooths, add an edit poly on top and use soft selection.
Tadaa! Dents.

It looks nice racer but you could get the same effect by using a noise map in the bump channel with out the extra geometry.
cool gun strap though!
I'm not really feeling the position/shape of his side cloth thing either... The fabric shape suggests that the fabric wasn't made as a square...
