New RAGE screenshots are kinda a letdown. I'm excited about the game because i think it will be fun, but is anyone else getting pretty disappointed with the art/tech as time goes on? This looks decidedly inferior to top console games like Uncharted and Killzone and Gears, let alone pc stuff on the horizon like crysis.
Not me, not by a mile. "Decidedly inferior" seems way too strong a statement since I don't even agree regarding your comparative shortlist. The only things detracting from the visuals to me are occasionally low-res environment textures that pop up here and there and shadows that inconsistently/inappropriately go to black, like on America Nipple in that batch of shots. Otherwise it looks downright sick.
I think it looks better in motion, the environments look awesome, characters and everything look really nice, one of the best looking games IMO. Can't think of a better looking one ATM.
Yeah just a few low rez textures and minor issues like that stop it from being perfect.
Looks hawt to me. And lets not forget that a lot of the breakthroughs brought on by RAGE aren't simply a matter of quality but ease of use for the artists, things we should be VERY excited about as game artists.
Yea im looking forward to getting my hands on that editor when they release it with the game. pretty sure i heard that somewhere.
I don't see how that could be called a bad looking screen shot, sure there might be some texture blurriness but given the overall level of detail it still looks better than 90% of most games, especially since its multiplatform.
Really excited to play this game, the world is right up my alley, mad max style post apoc.
I can sort of see what SupRores getting at.
I wouldn't say its 'bad art' by any stretch of the imagination but its the least inspiring one I've seen.
Too me its just an unfortunate screen grab which isn't showing the character at its best.
The pose is mid motion and not completely dynamic at the particular frame captued and it highlights the blockiness of the hands.
The FOV looks to be throwing the scale off of individual components as well.
Not all screen grabs can do justice to your art and in motion I'm 200% sure it's fucking sexytime.
Shit, I'd be proud as fuck to have that on my reel.
Texel res. of the left hand columns a bit iffy though. :poly108:
That's an odd way to measure animation quality Bethesda is known to be horrible at this since days of Morrowind.
Aren't they still using some Morrowind character animations?
I have high hopes for a better storyline in New Vegas, but visually F:NV can't compete with RAGE, not even close. They really need to drop the GameByro engine, it's been like 10 years now.
I totally think that Bethesda should adopt the ID 5 engine, so that their worlds can stop feeling so cut and paste. Seriously it's made for big outdoor environments.
60fps speed at 720p resolution in a first person shooter is already pretty much unmatched in today's console games, but they also have an open world on top of it, with Megatexture providing a completely unique environmental variety. Sparth's design and the id art teams skills in polishing the content are the final blows.
But that horribly compressed and slow video can't possibly do the game any justice. If any id guys are reading: release a direct feed 60fps video, like, yesterday!
If i'm not mistaken, COD does 60fps, but I'm not sure they do native 720p. They also have some degree of texture streaming- I remember a COD4 artist interview where they zoom into a soldier's watch in-engine and you can read all the numbers on the watch face.
That said, if they don't get best in show, I'll be very surprised... and they're not really even promoting it that hard.

Agreed.
However, keep in mind that their current, plugin-centric tech is the main reason why Morrowind/Oblivion/Fallout modding comunities have managed to grow so big. I believe it's safe to say that Bethesda owes its current success to them. Without a strong community, Morrowind would never sell so many copies during all these years; the game was a technical clusterfuck when it came out and fell from the TOP10 rather quickly.
Now, I'm sure that ID 5 will have some sort of modding tools, but it's the ability to mash up together a myriads of mods and customize your game that makes plugin-based modding so unique.
By the way, if you continue watching past the first video Slum linked to, it goes to another Rage video. And in that one Tim Willits says that the PC version will ship with the editor!
COD is about 1024x640 with 2xAA and the levels are quite linear.
Actual player freedom in Rage is still a question, but it definitely is a continuous open world (or two if they ship on two discs, but you get what I mean).
Yeah because IGN giving Portal 2 best PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 game but Rage wins best overall game? Funny I didnt know Rage was on any other console then that.
Anyway, looking past the stupidness of IGN got to stay Rage's visuals look FANTASTIC! Environments are crazy with mega texture. Cant wait to get my hands on that editor.
Cant say much for game play. Looks like just your average shooter with really nice graphics and a car mechanic.
it looks like it will at least be as fun as bioshock.
I guess IGN couldn't give portal 2 best everything, I think they shouldn't of given it best 360 game because of the additional ps3 features, and instead gave the 360 to rage because the demos were being ran on it.
Looks great. I mostly like the little towns. They totally stick out for me as being fabulously designed. Also the character animations look very smooth and the designs are great. That's the stuff that i like most i love the rest as well though.
The only thing at E3 that was even more impressive than Rage is the Deus Ex presentation that's been leaked recently. Do some google searching, and prepare for awesomeness.

But yeah, bethesda characters are soo stiff and clunky.
