Long time no post! So here's a rainbow composited from multiple shots, taken in Finland at 6-7am (hence the redness and the slightly wonky horizon, sorry about that :poly132: )
That's a pretty cool trick you did with the lights there, Paul! Rear-curtain sync?
Rear-curtain sync refers to using a flash. This is more likely a longish exposure where the beginning (or ending) had movement, but the majority was still.
Poop is correct. The shutter on my Rolleiflex broke that night; speeds 1/125 and 1/250 still function but anything slower and the shutter will remain open. That light streak effect was created accidentally when I tilted the camera on the tripod after the shutter was supposed to close.

I wondered that too, but it may have been do to the amount of light that was available. The non-blurred items are dark. Maybe a partially closed shutter would only allow in bright objects
As poop said, it was most likely a long-exposure shot. If he accidentally tilted his camera at the very end of the shot, only the light will have blurred.
Paul, why didnt all the picture blur as you must have tilted the entire camera?
It's about averages. Lights are able to expose the film quickly in a short period, so even the last 1/30 of a second on a 6 second exposure will leave light trails, but something dark, will need the entire 6 seconds just to be recorded on the film at all, so that last 1/30 of a second isn't enough to record any information. Technically it is just as blurred as the light is, but the blurred part is so dim as to be unreadable.
That alley was much darker in real life than it appears in the picture; the exposure itself was around 3 to 4 seconds long and the film I used had an ISO rating of 100 so it is a pretty slow film. The entire image is blurry; apart from the light streaks it is most noticeable in the pavement on the ground, as well as the towing sign on the extreme right. These areas however were pretty dark so like Poop explained very little light was recorded from these areas on the film at the time of the tilt which is why the entire picture isn't as streaky as the lamp lights. The people in the photo were pretty much standing still so that's why they are still recognizable.

I love happy accidents.
I love your photos.
Best malfunction ever?
