Excellent shot rube, I love the swirly bokeh you can get from old lenses. Is the crown graphic your first 4x5 system? How do you like that format? Also what method do you use for processing the film sheets?
Thanks, yeah this is my first large format camera. I'm liking it so far, haven't had much chance to get out with it yet though. For developing I'm using tray development follonwing this guys youtube videos. http://www.youtube.com/user/ZoneIII#p/u/1/Aqm8e7gUvxY . I did 6 negatives at once and I think that was a bit much for me to handle first time out. I think it will work well, it's a bit of a hassle to set up but it was a lot cheaper than getting a 4x5 tank.
Thanks for the info; I only develop 135 and 120 at home but I'm planning on doing 4x5 as well. Another question; how did you digitize your negative? Did you print and scan a contact sheet or do you have a 4x5 film negative scanner or another method?
I have a scanner (Epson v600) that will scan up to 120 film, so I just scanned in two parts and stuck them together in PS.. I haven't gotten into making any prints yet, that'll be the next project.
Old Sigma 50mm 2.8 macro, with tamron 1.7x TC = 75mm macro lens. I'm a little surprised by how sharp it is through that TC, very happy with the performance there. Makes a nice alternative to the more expensive Sigma 70mm 2.8 or Tamron 90mm 2.8 lenses, even if its really a ~4.0 or 4.5, I pretty much always stop macro lenses down to that range anyway.
I'm really liking the live view on my A560 for macro shots too, without live view, this is a lot more difficult, harder to track etc.
snapped a couple of these at the park today. there were so many rabbits everywhere it was insane. picked up a nikon d5100 a few weeks ago and trying to get a hang of all the various settings. these were taken with the kit lens and a 55-200mm .
and this one is a night shot from my apartment balcony
@EQ, did you do any post on that image with the bee? Because those colours are incredible rich. Was also going to ask what lens you used, but I decided to rather look at the metadata. But of course it doesn't tell you about the extender you used.
So the new Sony is treating you better than your old Canon?
I'm loving the Sony A560, the extra resolution, noise performance and great dynamic range are the highlights, plus its more comfortable and has an excellent flip out screen, and super fast AF in live view mode. I'm sure a Canon T2i would have been an excellent upgrade to my 350D too, but i'm really blown away by the quality and features on this A560. Plus I can buy all sorts of cheap minolta/sony/third party lenses, which was really the main reason I got it over a Canon body.
I'm using a Sigma 50mm 2.8 Macro, the old version which you can find for $75-150 or so(there is also a Quantaray one, same lens). Its an awesome lens and dirt cheap, but is incompatible with Canon DSLRs if you find one in Canon mount, and probably incompatible with the new Sony SLT's(a33, a35, a55, a65, a77) as well, seems something has changed and finally broken legacy sigma compatibility. Not worried about that though, I paid barely anything for it and I think i will be sticking with Sony SLR(not slt) bodies for a while.
I used a Promaster(Tamron re-brand) 1.7x AF teleconverter, which I got bundled with some other crap. That makes it essentially a 85mm 4.5 or so lens, a nice range for this sort of macro work.
Wow, I've really been out of the loop, had to look up SLT now, that must be a new development, as when I last looked at the sony alpha range of DSLR's beginning of this year / end of last year, there was no mention of SLT's.
Every Photographer has a different way of doing curves - I've seen some really wierd ones, and I know some photographers are touchy about them (with regards to sharing them), is yours the fairly standard S curve? The effects are subtle, but works really well at pushing the image.
@kaptainkernals - I am not sure what were the curves he used looking like , but it is aways so different for every image you take. If you dont know what you are looking for from a certain image just go crazy with it, experiment. Put the curves on a adjustment level and play with them. Add levels or whatever. If you know what you are looking for is easier then you know exactly how you want it to look and there are only few ways you can get there.
When I do contrast adjustments, generally i'll get my main contrast done in the RGB curve, then go back to R, G and B channels individually and play with them a bit. This one was pretty simple.
I generally do curve adjustments per image, or per set if I have multiple photos with the same lighting, and just copy the curve layer to each.
^ Pretty much what disanksi said above, too.
Gradient map layers can be a lot of fun as well on low opacity, even just playing with the preset gradients.
Thanks Disanki, yeah, I understand that, and thats exactly what I do, I Just kinda like seeing peoples curves sometimes, it's interesting.
Exactly as EQ showed now, was just curious to see his method of doing curves - particularly on that image.
There's a strange phenomenon in the retouch biz, and even the design biz, where people are possessive over their curves, which is odd, as both you Disanki and EQ say, it's dependant on the image.
Can we maybe start posting more web-friendly resolution photos? Having a forum page loaded with 5,000 pixel wide images is driving my internet browsers bonkers.

Yeah, say what, 2000 max? There really is no reason to post full res straight from camera shots here. I generally post 1000-1400 wide, there really isn't a need for more than that, learn to resize and sharpen guys!
Wow Paul that reflection is .. my English is not good enough to describe this And the very rich red glow Amazing
I have not been taking a lot of photographs lately and I have been thinking more and more to replace my digital camera for film ... soon

Only decent shot from first tests my new crown graphic. I think messed up developing though since all my negatives came out super thin.
Some tilt added to try for the miniature look.

a benefit of having a nice panorama view from the apartment. sadly incomplete in places, my balcony was in the way.
