haha, no no, have seen it many times. "Mr. Han Solo".. spacecraft confused me ...somehow ... i call mine "Mr. Head dead Solo" because i allready know that there is nothing alive behind it(very bonebraking condition/position)
1hr or so with a mouse, wanna learn mudbox, will keep going with intuos and try to make this not suck. http://i4.tinypic.com/4xktjsj.jpg
from a box.
Edit: Ten more minutes w/tablet, using my subd level a bit better.
would really like to get some crits on that head before I get one subdivision further! (Ears need detail, but I can't get more out of it at that level)
I haven't done any 3d stuff for more than 3 months (you don't have much time to sit in front of the computer while in the army)
I don't mean to be harsh, but... No. I don't really see an improvement. Overlay a head with a similar perspective/distortion and pay very close attention to how everything actually is. Don't make what you see as a realistic head, make a realistic head.
wow suprore , why the snidiness and arrogance on your last posts ? you could have at least give him some hints of why you think it doesnt work , none can read your mind. It has alot of flaws , i agree with you , but beeing a prick wont help him.
seforin : the only thing i think you should do now is to study the shape of the skull , once you know it and imagine the skin ontop of it you can actually get a cool shape. i wold advise to draw skulls on people on the newspapers etc, i know its morbid , but it helped me alot
There are finer points to suggest than just "study anatomy" ... that's the least helpful way of being helpful. Suggest some techniques which have benefited you (like Johny did), or point out some useful reference books or websites.
Give pointers as to what is working well, and what isn't, and which specific areas you think could be improved.
If you don't think you have time to write such a considered post, don't write a post at all until you do have time to make it helpful instead of demoralising.
Personally I'd suggest working out volumes at lower subdivision levels, keeping in mind the major planes of the face - something like Asaro's "planes of the head" can be handy for this sort of study.
Also find reference photos with strong directional lighting that really pick out the main volumes of the face, and like Johny said you need a good understanding of the skull anatomy to realise what it's doing underneath the muscles and skin to make sharper points as it's nearer the surface.
yea I actually own a few anatomy books, mainly the dynamic anatomy ones from hogarth and atlas of anatomy, its just recent that I got more into skulpting as oppose to low poly/ next gen mechy stuff, so Im trying to get more into the organic departments, I know my ears are bad, Im doing another skulpt tommorrow I spent the majority of today after doing this new skulpt just drawing ears, I can finally draw them, now I need to skulpt them.
As far as ripping me a new asshole, I expect it with my anatomy its my weakest department that needs improving, I rather here someone tell me it sucks as oppose to someone sugar coating itand tell me it looks ok (people I go to school with for example)
besides I was a asshole before on a older post and Rore called me on it, so were even now ,haha
I hope there isnt a rule of posting to many skulpts, I plan on doing alot of different ones this week...
well heres the newer ones
spent another hour from the guy I posted earlier...
I did this guy in 35 minutes and then my break at work was over
Well I'm noticing one major thing wrong with all of your sculpts so far. Its the ears. The tops of the ears should be roughly in line with the top of the nose where it meets the brow, and the end of the ears where they connect to the side of the head should be in line with the end of the nose. I'll see if I can find (later) a head proportions guide somewhere, but right now its 3:30 A.M.
Edit: Also don't look at fleshy anatomy, but get good reference images of the human skull and underlying musculature so that you can understand where those shapes your sculpting are coming from.
playing with a basehead I made in ZB. Yeah, he got messed up by something with claws. Not Recently though, he's had quite some time for it to heal up a good deal.
BE careful using the Hogarth book. It's way too stylised (IMHO) and not much use at all. I found " Anatomy for the Artist" by Sarah Simblett to be far more useful. Try working from photo ref at first if possible.
Really seforin, it looks like you're sculpting without good reference, or at least not paying much attention to your ref, which is really just going to waste your time if you want to learn anatomy. Dig up some better references and try to match them, and try doing some simpler sculpts at lower subd levels to get an idea of how to define the bigger forms. The link mop posted was awesome, I personally really like some of the stuff down here , and there are tons of drawing books, sculpting books, and people all over both the internet and life.
Back when I was really new to art, and first starting, somebody... Johnny or b1ll, I think, just told me to open my eyes. That's really all there is to it, at this point. Just start looking at how these things are really constructed, and you should be able to learn a lot fairly fast. I guess that's what I was trying to say before, just didn't word it in a very constructive way. Sorry, again.
(gonna quit spamming and actually post art next time, i guess)
Nice work mop, he seems a bit tense though, is he squinting his eyes or closing them relaxingly? What kind of dinner do you cook that has to cook 30 mins ?
I decided to step out of my comfort zone and did something completely stylized. I had a more fleshed-out version, which took about an hour, but Mudbox just loves to crash on me as I'm finishing up a piece. So here's what came of twenty minutes and a sphere.
actually that was just a quick doodle, and while working on it I had ideas on how the full body could be so I think the only way to get something that works would be to retopo it, paintover, probably, etc..
I used arsh's basebust for that so the topology isn't really adapted to that result hence the need for a retopo...but yeah I want to finish it ^^

Very good for your first. You could use a lot more Subdivisions or cant your PC handle it?
@PolyHertz
Thats crazy, i love it,
but i just cant believe that it is made in 1hour and a half!
@ xysdf
Very cool! Never came to my mind sculpting a head from a plane.

oh, and Davision3D, I have witnesses for this one (Seforin and Josh Winn)! :P
edit: Something Seforin asked me to do tonight: A five minute head. Didn't think it was worth bumping the topic for, so just including as an edit.

Sorry, didn't mean to come across that way.
There's not really much to say, though, except 'study anatomy', we just suggested different ways to do it.
