This is the sweet spot for your low-poly models. Post 'em if you've got 'em!Low-poly hasn't really been a requirement in the games industry for a long while now. This thread is for low-poly art style appreciation, so please take note of these rough guidelines:
- Keep models under 1,000 triangles.
- Scenes are fine, if all models are low poly.
Some dedicated low-poly modelling tools now exist that make this art style a lot easier to produce;

Turned out fantastic!
The improvements over the initial concept are great as well, it turned out really nice.
Wow! (No pun intended.)
I thought I was looking at your concept painting for the shield the whole time, thinking to myself, "When is he gonna put the damn texture on his model?!"
Only to find out the masterpiece was the completely textured model.
Well done, man.
@ bounchfx
410 triangles, probably could've been less but i really liked those spikes on the front.
wire:
Yeah your right, the texture is 256x512
Anyways i saw a comp over at the TGC forums that peaked my interest, to create anything made of wood, i wanted to make a robot, so here's my awfully shit sketch:
Gonna get to work modeling him, again low poly. (sick of normal maps already, haha)
Its on!!
Basically done the low poly, wanna see how much of the character i can make with the texture:
hhuh here is my first try with sdk, a little plagiarism of a pior's model(hope he doesn't mind)
Cheers!
Texture so far:
EDIT:
image updated.
I really enjoy texturing wood for some reason.
I think JFletcher proves you wrong KP !
Your work is marvelous JFletcher.
I knew he reminded me of someone!
I demand a bow-tie!
Awesome paintwork
even with no audio a visual ref would be awesome!
oh just to jump on the bag wagon like everyone else
"OH MY GODZ!!!!!One!1! AWESOME"
Fletcher: Lovely colors, man! Great stuff.
The rest of you: GET BACK TO WORK AND POST SOME IMAGES!
UPDATED~!
Thanks ArtMachine and SHEP, that fanny pack did look pretty half-assed. Hopefully this reads a bit better...
wires & texture for anyone interested.
Looks awesome JFletcher, I really love your shadows and the balance and contrast you have in your textures.
Spacey- sweeet!
Fletcher what are you doing with your lightbake to get these shadows to be cool?
Main part of the character finished:
i didn't have much space for the fuel thing on the back so im gonna create another 128x128 map for it.
@ seforin
ok, i'll make a video for this last bit.
EDIT:
oh, i'm gonna put a little leaf on the end of that twig on top of the head, case anyone thought that was a little random
@ StJoris
I like to think its the color, you can create a layer above with a color blending mode which you can apply to only dark areas of the texture under blending options.
Download the model pacakge here:
http://zylyx.quakeone.com/grunt.zip
The model comes in the following flavours:
Quake 3 .md3 (be sure to edit the QC file)
Alias .fbx
Collada .dea (not tested)
LightWave .lwo (for versions above 7.5, be sure to reweld all of the vertices, depending in what package you edit the model in)
Enjoy!
Ah fletch your the man!
Please let me know when its up!
Also I think the very strong blues makes it look... "hazy" and slightly flat, but that's your style so
[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kwnIz-2Xyh4[/ame]
kinda crappy quality but you get the gist of it.
Thanks for the crit leviathan.
I was pretty bummed, looked at other places and it was discontinued elsewhere (bad timing eh?)
then i found a damn fine limited deal at tablet4u and got an A4 for the same price!! this is gonna be sweet, i don't even know if i have enough room. (and i like that!!)
So in short yes im still using my mouse. For now at least.
That is if "A5" means the wide screen version as the first google result i found would suggest.
also:
I honestly did not know about this, i can use the top of the pen as an eraser? thats just fucking insane.
When you're painting the highlights and shadows, are you just working with like, 2 or 3 colors, and have a low opacity brush to layer them on? Or are you working in full opacity, and constantly picking new colors for exactly the one you want?
Also, after you paint the highlights on, you do something to tone them back, and I couldn't tell if it was just erasing slightly, or if you're blurring some too? or what?
Thanks man.
This ^
I was erasing them slightly.
Right, anyways, seems this one has been milked for too long, calling it done, gonna get started with something else now.
