Thanks Hawken, I love a good crit, this was helpful. Here's one of Tan that I did which is even more muddy than the bjork one I did it before reading your post. I might do the next ones starting with linework to nail down proportions first because moving features around has made things harder. I also want to figure out if it's best to get overall contrast right first but then have to shade between extreme darks and lights or to add shading gradually with low opacity. I had to cut it short at 40 minutes.
tacit math you have started a revolution

what I often do is lay down some very rough lines copied from the photo, then make this layer into a new doc, and start painting from there. As for contrast, often do that at the end with the sliders in photoshoppe
made a small update to the Symmskribbl. in this version draw size is now visible. and controlled by the keys 1 - 6
note: this is just a tester so is not fully developed ( but works just fine ). processing only allows for certain sized bitmaps to be used as the cursor. so there are only 6 predefined draw sizes at this time
i've got a lot to learn of the processing language. but as it is i'm finding some limitations. i'll learn some more. see if it will do what i want. and if so will add a 1 step undo function ( i could add this now. but i'm trying to figure some other shit out first. priorities )
my feeling is though. that i will need to build it in something else. director and flash are mostly out of the question. maybe learn some c ++. seems like overkill for such a simple little app
initially i had no intention of putting in an undo. keeping the thing really raw. a simple tool to throw down some quick forms. then i see how guys like pior are using it. almost to a point of producing complete works. so ultimately. just one undo would be nice. to clear away any big f__k ups one might make ( especially since there's no wacom action here. no 'light' sketching. with add ons processing does support tablet pressure. but the way it handles transparency almost makes that pointless )
i do see the value of including a few colours. maybe some rgb sliders. but there's a danger of trying to involve too much. and straying from my original concept. i'll define a list of what i see as the essentials. and try and stick to it. feedback is welcome though. so if there are features that others might want that i can add quickly/easily. i'll do my best to get them in
my feeling is though. that i will need to build it in something else.

I'm amazed no one has tried to remake deluxe paint for the pc / mac
had some cool functions, like this mirror mode. Went one further and let you define your axis for any possible number of degrees of symetry. Made some cool snow flakes like that.
Yeah, I pretty much like it as is. No undo, its FUN! I also like how brush size was invisible in the first versions, but its reall to each his own I think.
My only suggestion would be about file numbeing when pressing enter. I would like a whateverXXX solution, that would prevent weird numbering past the ninth drawing. I'd also love to see the app starting the numbers from the last saved one to avoid drawings being mixed/overwritten. Or being asked for a filename on the first time I hit enter on a new project (like, on first "entersave" after startup or on the first one after a canvas cleanup)
symmskibblin' neat proggy
I like the no undo thing, kind of forces you to explore different possibilities and all, I really like it (thanks to pior, who harrassed me for the whole week so that I got the program installed )
It would also be interesting if Symmskrbbl could do radial symmetry, with a variable number of "branches" I have no idea how hard that would be to code so I totally understand if thats like another order of difficulty, math wise.
Cthogua - actually. the symmetry bit is the simplest of all the aspects involved. but given my admittedly weak scripting talent it's getting all the other parts working that's the f__ker. things like what pior suggested ( the user defined file naming. entirely valid ) are a little tricky to pull off with processing. i might be quite stuck for a way to get that all working with accessible fields. if only flash or director borrowed certain ways from that language. or vice versa. i could get it all going with a sweet piece of ui in a day or so
as it stands. i can't justify spending too much time working on it. i'd rather be pushing the forms themselves. if i had any coder friends i'd pass on the task. or at least get their help to speed along my understanding. the great divide in software development. for the most part it's artists using the tools that programmers build. and the artist doesn't usually have the ability to get inside these tools ( or. as in this case. create them from scratch ) to tweak them to their individual needs and workflow
i apologise in advance if i can't bring it all together as well as we'd like
.
for general interest. other symmetry drawing options include: alias studiotools. painting in zbrush ( somewhat slow ). mirrored uv's in maya ( kinda slow also ) or any realtime 3d painting app. and Mirror Drawer. which starts to behave in a somewhat queer manner after a while
I've been without a tablet for a few months now, and swamped with a DVD contract. I haven't had too much time to sketch but I managed to get a little time in..
Photoshop was being really odd about something and I couldn't fix it up, but ended up managing it by deleted certain configuration files hiding off somewhere in Application Data.
so while reconfiguring Photoshop, i had to make sure my brushes were working correctly, and before you know it, here this is.
HEY! so now pior's the only one allowed to apply a warm-cool gradient on top of his work? thanks for the kind words everyone, i liked how it turned out, too. more soon.
I've been trying to work a bit on my 2D skills but I didn't use nearly enough visual reference so my lighting and most of her features are... confused, to say the least
Don't know about that paintover Snowfly, but I think I still like Revliss version a bit better. Your paintover has an entirely different feel. She looks older and more dignified, while Revliss painting has the spoiled brat look, which I like. I do agree though that especially her nose could use a few tweaks. Her nostril seems bigger than the tip of her nose.

Very cool sketching, guys.
More sym
mmm ten minutes free at work, just time to break out the symmetry

I've only just recently thrown femmes into my drawing routine ~~D:
Quick (read: slow) figure thumbs
Eater of Butterflies
I think I'll go back and repaint the hair. Its kinda manky.
EDIT:Some sort of hearing appendage might also be worth adding. D'oh.
i dig.
