Nice work n30 and Scooby! His face has a lot of expression there, and I like the way you handled the beard.
n30: I agree with qube, you should just map the nose straight on, it's a lot easier to paint, and nobody cares about that tiny distortion anyway... a little asymmetry on the mesh would be cool to see too. I don't think anyone would mind you updating the SDK, since the UV's would only be a tiny change.
I'll be updating the sdk tonight. I'll fix the nose. I use to do that for noses so i got no distortion but seems i'm the only person who likes to work that way. Thats fine. Anyway, check back later tonight. I'll be working on a texture myself.
Just messin' around with this one. If anyone else wants to play with it, let me know and I'll upload it. The UV's are pretty bad though, I only spent a few minutes on them.
Bronco you're improving a little bit with these textures but seem to be making the same mistakes over and over, i suggest that you try photosourcing a texture just so you can get the feel of natural skin tones and try for some less exagerated lighting. Oh and paint in color if those are done in greyscale with color tweaks as they look like they are because your shadows are very black and highlights are very white the only thing that looks to have color is your midtones. Ill do a paintover for you when i eat some food i just woke up.
yeah thanks man, would be cool if ya could do me a little paint over.
Im not very confident with natural surfaces yet and just can't bring myself to let loose on them,i think its because im so uptight I tend to really exaggerate things.
also ive not yet found a method of doing faces(and natural surfaces) that i feel comfortable with...e.g greyscale start and add colour...or try just painting...or try doign a harliquine and just exsperiement with levels and such.
at the moment I seem to be using all 3 of the above methods and although there are definatily slight improvments with the finished texture. However directions i go to get to the final product are pretty abismal and are in no way consistent.
Ok i dont have the model to check this on or anything and its just a quick 15 mins or so but hopefully it will help you out a bit with your shading and colors.
[edit] i guess i should tell you how i did this too, first thing i did was paint out all the really dark shadows and with a neutral tanish color, when i was done with that i opened a new layer and painted some bright red/pinkish on the nose cheeks and ears, did hue/saturations tweaks and messed with the opacity until it looked right. Then started a new layer and painted some blue on his chin area where he would have stubble or whatever did the same tweaks with the red layer. And then a final layer with a brighter tanish color to blend in the blue and red in some spots and do a little bit of shading work. And finally i merged the layers, tweak the hue to about -9(more redish) and mirrored it over.
Whoops, looks like i forgot to paint out the blackish areas on the ears but those werent too bad.... oh well
ok, after seeing it on the model the shadow at the end of the jaw needs to run into the ear, instead of straight up like i painted it.
cheers for taking the time to do that Earthquake..ill finish the model im doing and have another bash at one of these heads....see what I can come up with this time
Mine turned out ok. Not sure if i'm done yet. Its late and I didn't do any eyebrows but I raised the hat for the render a little. I may add them later.

In other news I managed to get my first offsite contract tonight.
Very cool stuff vassago and ScoobyDoofus! very impressive
@n30g3n3s1s: I like the shading on this one a lot. I'd only suggest to use some more red and on top of it a stronger highlight to make him a bit sweaty. But that's a matter of taste
Good idea. Alot of qubes textures uses that and i really love it on older men textures. I'll have to work on him some more tomorrow. thanks for the crit.
I think pretty much any texture will make that model look like Gandalf... I know mine does, and I'm painting mine all from scratch with no reference... although I just had an idea now to make it not look like him...
I'm gonna make his hat into the top of a mushroom - just saying that now so I can call dibs on it even if anyone else is already doing that and hasn't pimped it! It's MY idea! MINE!
haha awesome I love it. I was going to do an evil looking one but I got tied up in contract work. Nice! Love the blue greens you used in the shadow. I also like how you extended his face down into the beard part and it worked so well.
Wow! i just found this thread. Very awesome stuff guys. I decided i can't be left out of the fun so i've been doing some of them. Better late than never i suppose .
badass mike. i was just looking at your site the other day, your new stuff is great! great to hear from you to, it's been too long. i miss the touch of your beard on my back. haha hey are you going to the next gdc? there is a chance i couldn't go, depending if life hates me at the time or not. i'd love to meet up with you and the flashbang guys.
GDC is completely up in the air right now . but hey if it happens, just may be there will be beard action in it for ya. You got my email right? I'm never sure if i send them to the right place or not. Well hopefully i'll see you at the GDC or any other time really. Good to hear from ya.
Hi, first time posting here, Lots of good work on this thread, thought I would give one of the heads a try. I am hoping to get some feed back on my take on the wizard. Thanks in advance for comments and suggestions.
long time lurker, first time poster. I started this when the topic popped up the first time, but never got around posting it (I never posted anything). Now I take the come-back of this topic as a sign to finally post something.
Who else thinks we need to get this thread back up and running? I need to download the heads again or make a new one but I will be posting this weekend possibly.

Updated the SDK Grab it here. Added an optional pipe, fixed the nose, and mapped the back of his left ear (wasn't mapped before).

This is WIP,just wondering if this is any better than the others?....oh and excuse the hair trim...might turn it into a monk.
Also unfortunatily my studio,as it went screwy last night so i can't test it on the model ...hope you can do some visurlisation.

Still got lots to do on this as you can see. Nothing fancy, just a generic wizard.

1 brownie point for first person to quote the influence/reference
melkior : That would be Brom - Micheal 1995. Good likeness you're just missing the strong yellow highlights in the eyes.
shimmer : Love that look, great choice of colors.
Yeah I put them in 3 times and took them out - having a hard time making them look good - think I will re-do the eyes something wrong about the shape.
I might try to skin one of these baddies.
heres my WIP of Thnom's deamon head =]
