Google Books has a HUGE library of Popular Science magazines from 1925-2009
If you search you can dig up issues from 1872...
The search feature can also be used to search through the issues, pretty handy for digging up detailed images of crazy stuff.

A site with all kinds of transportation, fantasy or real.
It seriously has almost every kind of plane in existence, just click on the database tab.
You do have to pay for any vector images though, and all the images are never larger then around 900x900
I would think it is most useful for boats.
Found this while poking around for some architectural references. An art couple that travel the world take semi-extensive journals and several photographs (as well as drawings).
The photos range from people to landscape to architecture so something for everyone
(photos spread throughout the journal entries)
