Learning World Machine in order to create some nice terrain for my castle to live in. For practice though, thought I would try and capture the ambience of my home during a normal January. (Scottish Highlands) I think I succeeded. (beautiful place, just…so…cold…) Actually made me a bit nostalgic.
Ugh. Spent too long on this really and still not happy - creating a home environment for my castle. Trying to keep it a bit cartoony ala Gigantic or Overwatch but not sure I have succeeded yet I like purple things.
I think this is the longest I have gone without posting in a long time. I have a good excuse: I got a dog! (young female black greyhound) and I am totally smitten and distracted.
Aaaaanyway. As well as my main Cryengine scene, I am working on a few low poly projects as I am very aware that this is the style that I love, and also most of the studios in this area seem to lean towards the low poly, PC or mobile direction, and I need to update my folio. I found the most adorable pixel art online (Artist unknown) and had to recreate it. It has a llama. Nuff said.
I like modelling trees. Tried a new technique with these. A bit high poly, but we will see about reducing that once I have had a gander at them with a bit of texture. Happy so far.
I’m still working on this old project! It’s fallen by the wayside a lot as I concentrate on enviro work, but I just had to finish poor battlecat. Trying to finish up all my old projects before I dive into another one..
an, one of these days I will actually remember to post the final model when I actually finish it, not months later. As soon as I finish, I get excited for the next one and totally forget! This was finished a while ago but… yeah. Forgot. More images on my website (Http://www.allyalbon.com)
Pleased to get Editor’s Pick for this on Sketchfab too.
I finally finished my first hard-surface modelling task, ie, I had the time to actually sit down and learn Quixel Ddo.
Fun project but also very frustrating as everything seemed to go wrong at each step! Normal map was just not up to my standards and couldn’t seem to improve it and then once in Ddo, realised that a lot of the modelling was causing problems. Then I had the usual “mine doesn’t look like that!” issues on viewing other people’s Ddo videos on youtube… basically, my teeth were knashing from the word go. There are a lot of details missing simply because if I work on this anymore, I will probably just delete it.
However, it is finished, done, completed and served its purpose as my first hard-surface project – and I don’t hate it which is always a start. It has also given me the impetus to start another hard surface project soon, which will hopefully be even better!
Concept attached - although I ended up playing around a lot with the materials and gloss in the end cos I like my guns shiny, apparently.
So after much debate, I have put the castle scene on hold for now - I spent more time being bugged by it than actually producing anything. It was a great starter scene to learn some skills, but I took on too big a project I think. I will probably come back to it at some point, but for now I am making something a little more approachable - and more suitable for m folio. I am in the process of getting a new computer too - took 3 DAYS to decimate and export a few props from zbrush on my current machine !!!!
Computer...slowly... giving... up. Was going to attempt to post progress every couple of days but seeing as output is shockingly slow, that ain't happening. Thankfully, ordering a new beast this weekend
Finished up the presentation work for the llama scene! More pictures/details at my website. This was so much fun! (concept by the talented http://www.pixosprout.tumblr.com)
Thanks, guys! @Adam - funnily enough, I have been posing Battlecat yesterday and tonight so hopefully (hopefully...) will be wrapping it up fairly soon. I have said that before though.
I am on my new PC! So far, everything is working great!
First stage of the pirateships - unfinished, needs some more texture work and details. I still can’t find the concept artist, it’s a random pic I have had on my computer for a while. Anyone out in artland know who it is, please let me know.
A couple of peeps have been asking about my He man sculpt; I haven’t abandoned him! Im concentrating on enviro/props so didn’t want to dedicate too much time at the mo - and Zbrush was crashing every 5 minutes. However, my new PC is doing so well, I have started to pose BC
It’s an old mesh and really screwy so am running into a few issues with stretching, but will remesh and hopefully wrap up over the next week or so.
Stage 2 roughed out. And I have a cold. Again. Obviously have a rather weak immune system when it comes to American strains (Or I have to quit licking lamp posts, one or the other).
Totally wasted weekend, art wise, as I was too ill to concentrate on much. I did however have a bash at the Heman scene tho. Going to give him a rocky plinth to be dramatic on.
Work in progress: no 4. Ended up doing absolutely no portfolio work today (smacks own hand) so will catch up tomorrow. Spent today doing other work and housework. I know how to spend my Friday.
@Zephir - Woot! Your interpretation looks great! Mine are nearly finished, just doing a tidyup after getting some art direction. Hopefully finished tomorrow/monday. I see you are learning Unreal - I just picked it up yesterday so here goes.
I'm still working! I just forget to post in progress pics. This is a quickie from the last week, however it's turned out to be one of my favourite pieces so far. Shall have better pics on the website soon.
Wow! These all look amazing especially the battlecat. The curviness of the saddle is quite interesting and it's the first thing I look at for some reason.
Thanks everyone for your kind comments. @Catzcratch - I had not heard of the Long Dark before, thanks for the comment, I want to play it now!
I am back at my Last of Us scene - in a different engine. Was having issues with Cryengine not working, and also Unreal seems more suited for my style, so I switched to UE4 a couple of days ago - loving it so far, although I can't seem to achieve the polished realism that a lot of folks manage. Still, early days and this will be my main project for the next few weeks.
A quick lampost for my scene - learning to set up materials in Unreal has been an awesome process. So pretty (this picture, however, is from Marmoset). Getting in more practice with Quixel Ddo at the same time - twice the learning, twice the fun.
First building coming together. Spent a whole day sighing over how crappy my textures looked, then actually sat down to a UE4 material tutorial and realised I was doing it completely wrong. Now my metals look like metals. Shiny!
More pirate ships! All 4 are finished and on my website. This was a fun project! Tried a new texturing technique using zbrush renders which came out well, and then overpainted. I really liked making the barrels.
Made the low poly and started painting this bad boy over the weekend - should be finished soon! Admittedly, am rushing it a little bit simply to get it done rather than being lost on a dusty hard drive again...

Llamas are awesome.

@Fenyce - thank you so much for the artist link!!! That's really useful!!
As a Brit in Texas right now, I am really enjoying/hating the really freaky weather right now. I love thunderstorms but this is really pushing it!

thank you, I will be modelling mine soon too, your take on the art is great!

Barriers for my Last of Us scene in Marmoset. Metal looks much better in Unreal, but will do for now.
