Want to practice some hard surface texturing but not particularly interested in doing a bike or car or spaceship... so a pirate ship it is! Ahar! couple of hours in, about 20 to go...
My model based on a concept from the art of How to Train Your Dragon. I took one look and thought “I have to try and make that”. First time trying out proper texturing and it was terribly frustrating but got there in the end!
I think this keg holds a particularly fiery version of ginger beer.
Ohhh I like that keg. I have the art of how to train your dragon book on my christmas wishlist this year
I think you might do better with a different color background though, maybe a little darker or purple tinted. something else though. Right now it's sort of pulling your awesome keg into it.
Great job! Love to see it pouring out fiery ginger beer. hahaha
@riotorange - thanks! The art of book is just looovely, you won't regret it:) I was wondering that about the BG myself, may change it to get a better contrast.
Kinda wishing I had picked something easier for my first hardsurface model Hoping to make it into an epic ghost pirate ship eventually!
your stuff is realy cute and i like the style. And i love that berrel fish-pig-dragon thing. clean topology and norm map and the texture looks greate, realy nice work.
i really like the seal you textured, wondering if you updated it and rendered a final art showing it in its full glory. Keep up the good work. Feel like we are kinda in the same boat.
@PaulChen - the seal critter is "finished" as far as I can and will be coming soon - because I didn't really know what I was doing I made quite a lot of mistakes but I am hoping to get a few good renders out soon.
A little bit more on the ship - had a busy week - but really hoping to get the modelling part finished this weekend!
Thanks everyone for your kind words! The ship has been an epic battle, I must say!
Learning how to light - having trouble working out how to do it properly... watching a few tutorials but if anyone knows of any good websites/vids I would be appreciative!
looks good, yea you need some pretty lights in there
I also wondering about lighting in a scene, don't know much about rendering
anyway i would place something like faint sunlight from above, following the bright places on the background picture, so it looks right, maybe
@Nut - it's all very new to me and it is surprisingly hard to find good tutorials! There is actually quite a bright "moon" light up the top but it may have come out too blue.
First render! Not as horrifying as I thought it would be. And ignore that half the model is not textured. Feels like a decent start.
Not a lot done, mostly experimenting tonight. Also, having same problem as before where I suddenly lose UVs in Zbrush and have to go back into Maya and rebuild part of them. Any thoughts?
I have probably bitten off more than I can chew in attempting to jump into such detailed texturing in Zbrush – ah well, best way to learn! Hoping to finish texturing her tomorrow night.
Had a hideous couple of days with poor old Beans - must be because I abandoned her to watch horror films. Something in zbrush completely broke (AGAIN) and just weird stuff started happening to my paint job. Took me two days to figure it out and now I am tired of the poor dragon!
Playing about with rendering practice tonight (she does have teeth, wing membranes and claws, promise). Slowly there and should be ready for final presentation very soon.
Final model of my "dragon-Nymph".
This guy is pure nostalgia. When I was a child I used to make them out of blu tac - hours and hours of entertainment. Of course I had to try and model one again (but slightly more high tec).
Rana, king of winter, taking shape – worked on detailing his antlers today. Keep trying to give him some armor but so sleepy I can’t seem to start it! However, Christmas holidays are here….!
Beans is finished!
I watched How to Train Your Dragon again today (what?) after seeing the new trailer for HTTYD 2 (CANNOT WAIT) and was inspired to actually finish poor Beans. Nadders are still my favourite.
I am planning on learning to rig over the Christmas break to add a bit more life to my models…
I hope everyone had a lovely, lovely Christmas! Ours was quiet and nice and unusually gentle which was much needed! A lovely day, now back to work!
Inbetween working on my Stag model, I have begun a new MLP project – a carriage and two Royal Guards. I am trying to speed up my work flow and so far, going well. Along with the MLP carriage, I am also entering into a competition here on Polycount and have a rather large Zbrush tutorial to tackle – and learning basic rigging – so there really and truly is no rest for the downright wicked.
Nice work. Not super fond of the head design , the crooked teeth and back horns in particular but the quality is there so nice job. The wing pattern reads kinda noisy to me and feels a bit off with the rest of the design. Maybe simplify it a bit. Have fewer spots, bigger and perhaps just yellow to match the tail?
@aimbiz - thank you! I must add that it is not my design/olours - it is the wonderful Nadder from how to Train your Dragon and yes, I probably went a bit mad with the spots. I have colour issues!

A little bit more progress on the Stag and hopefully finish him this week. Spent most of today learning human head topology – almost have something worth showing, but not quite!
Mwahahahahahhaha.
Finally, Rana has all his fur. And I have a sore hand. Just a few tweaks to his armour and feet and then it is time to paint, and give him a base to stand on.
New modelling project alongside my polycount entry and Stag. Basemesh for two characters. The male ponies in Friendship is Magic are surprisingly difficult to nail – mostly because their profile and front views are completely and utterly different. Getting there, but not happy with proportions yet.
I love the fur on Rana, great job! definitely worth the hand cramp. If you don'y mind me asking, how did you do the fur on the neck/chest area? (from that one screenshot the armor is also looking pretty rad) Can't wait to see the finished model!!
The fur on his neck is a very basic fur alpha made in photoshop, then built up by hand individually (ow) using clay buildup and a bit of smooth. Very relaxing. Very time-consuming...

Spent the last week working on the character Polycount challenge for Jan - made it with 10 mins to spare Not totally happy with the model so will be doing some more work to make her portfolio worthy. Inbetween this, I am working on this dude - hoping to do some nice hand painted textures on him.

@JedtheKrampus - It does look a bit off, but it is matched perfectly to the turnaround model (as much as one can with MLP! However, once I added his eyelashes, it seems to sit better.

Should actually be finishing the texture rather than playing in Marmoset. Too Kool for School.
Still working on the My Little Pony Royal Guards – but my photoshop is being odd and keeps crashing, so instead I am cracking on with some prop work until I fix it. This is a concept from Frozen (love that film) that I found online and just had to try out, mostly because of the lovely texture potential. Hopefully I will capture some of the fun of the original piece!
Tonight’s progress. I had hoped to model more fishy (that’s a tuna steak up there!) but it’s been a long day and I want to enjoy making the feesh. Game of Thrones time instead.
Thinking of trying out 3d Studio Max soon, to add that to the folio along with Maya…

Hi poly all done. Now time to unwrap this badboy and then start on the lowpoly…
Trying desperately to finish off a couple of older works as I am starting an online class soon and want to concentrate as much as poss - so working on Rana again. I wasn't going to make a low-poly, just keep him in Zbrush - but I imported him into marmoset yesterday and was pleasantly surprised, so he will get a game model too, eventually!
I like your deer fella a lot. Though I can't help but feel a standing position may be better for a presentation shot, since his jumping pose has his (front) limbs looking pretty noodley.

Tonight I made cannons. A nice change from the head-hurting ship modelling. Boom!

Half-finished polypaint.
