Go find books by Andrew Loomis, Burne Hogarth, Glenn Vilppu (Whom you already know about) or George Bridgman and practice, practice, practice. Some of the books can be incredibly cheap, and others not so much.
The pose you are using is very stiff. It's called a T-pose. These days character artist use the A-pose. T-pose is usually only good for old mocap data. Also your anatomy isn't great.
