XSI has a rotoscope mode for putting background images or movies in the viewport background. In 3dsmax it's just called viewport background. The shading error above seems a bad exported(or averaged) vertex normal. Caution with the 3dsmax2obj exporter that comes with 3dsmax ( it messes a lot the normals).
