query about .3ds format..

Could you help me about this issue.?
I want to ask you one thing about .3ds format..
I have created the 20k model in 3dsmax and when I export the model in .3ds format and after that when I import the .3ds file into 3dsmax or game engine then I got just double poly count.
So please let me know how I can manage the same poly count in .max file and .3ds file both formats.
If you can help about this issue then I would be obliged.
