Hey everyone, my name's Joel, I'm 19, and I'm an aspiring video game character artist. I'm brand new here at Polycount, and I'm looking forward to being a part of this community and benefiting from whatever critiques you may have.
I've been playing around with 3D graphic art software since I was 11, and I've been doodling since as long as I can remember. I tried college for a semester, but decided self teaching is more my thing, so here I am at Polycount hoping to get much needed critique and encouragement as I start this journey to my dream job.
At least at first, this thread is going to have portraits done in pen. One a day. I may add 3D work into my daily routine as I get the hang of this, but I would love to hear suggestions as to other exercises I could do that would develop the necessary skills I need to be a character artist.
I thought it would be fitting to draw Joel from the Last of Us to start this off as my name is Joel.

Decided to start doing more gesture drawings. This lady's throwing candy out for a parade, in case you were wondering!
This done from reference of a painting done for a book called "Dinotopia" in 1998. Found the image in the book called "Color and Light, A Guide for the Realist Painter" by James Gurney.
