If there's a game to get Eberts attention then this is could be one of them. Regarding the early PC release, I think I'll just wait a few days and get it on PS3 and claim my free PC version with it :]
I doubt it, portal is a very gamey game. I'd say L.A. Noir would be a better candidate but I'm pretty sure he'll never consider games valid art.
... Are you serious? Giving away the first game that they've released in a while, which all this promotion is for, years of work, just because people participated in the ARG?
That'd be like giving away the game to everyone who's shown a remote interest in the game, hoping those who didn't will buy it?
Tss, french economics
I'm getting the game for free, from Valve*, for doing much less than that so I wouldn't be surprised.
(*Steam/Source developer account, etc. Unrelated to Polycount/TF2 Polycount Pack)
That was a waste. Thank god I didn't buy into that cause Portal 2 hasn't been released yet. What is it now possibly 6 hours of early game time? Big woop. Not worth getting the Potato Sack for.

Eh, you didn't have to buy the (heavily discounted pack of really awesome indie games) to participate in the event OR partake in the early release.
Nine people who were "taken over" by GLaDOS during the ARG have gotten early access to the game.
Also for those of you saying that this is stupid and pointless for getting released 7-10 hours earlier, I somewhat agree that they could have started this timer thing a few days earlier. Still, this has been a better marketing campaign than any other game ever pretty much. The ARG that brought tons of attention to both Portal 2 and all of the independent games in the Potato Sack is something that's never been done this successfully before, not to mention the extremely well executed Investment Opportunity videos.

You're.. supposed to buy the indie pack to support the indie developers and play some great games, with the portal 2 benefit as a bonus. Not because you want portal 2 to release earlier.
^ Indeed. I dont see why people are going like "OMG PORTAL 2 EARLY". Ill gladly wait for portal(still waiting on episode 3 ) though got to play/buy some new indie games.
Actually got this game for free too from a kind soul on reddit, there was one of those "Hey i'm giving away a free steam game who deserves this the most?" posts and I told 'em about how i didn't participate in the valve polycount challenge so i could get F'd over in Blizzard starcraft 2 mod challenge. It also didn't hurt that I'm flat broke and hadn't gotten a job yet so this is actually going to be a real treat for me. I'm currently scrounging up quarters so i can buy some beer for release time! Gonna be a good night.
Oh and like a day later i got my first job interview and pwned it, start any day now in LA. LIFE IS GOOD!
Yes, it's such an awful scam. They have clearly fooled everyone into paying money for video games. Nobody could have possibly known that their money would be exchanged for video games when they clicked on the "purchase video games" button.
If only Valve had just listed it as a video game sale instead of clearly lying to us by calling it a video game sale.

Fuuuuuu-
well the scam is there is no early release, never was. early release was a lie like the cake.
Took me 8 hours to complete it, started co-op with my friend and played for next 2 hours, it was amazing, can't stop thinking about this game, can't wait for the new SDK.
Got the PS3 version (for tge free PC/Mac version) Only played co-op.. AMAZING!
Also love the fact that with the PS3 version I can play co-op with one copy.. As long as you have 2 steam accounts. Valve really knows how to do cross platform gaming.
Co-op with PC and my PS3? Genius!
I just beat the singleplayer. Pretty amazing. I think it's probably one of the best singleplayer experiences that could be had, really. The writing, acting, art and gameplay are all spot on.
The only thing I even mildly dislike is the loading screens.
I also thought they were going to do/could have done something more interesting with Cave Johnson and classic Aperture than just walking through listening to audio logs. It was also kind of strange that the ending was a pre-rendered cinematic rather than using the in-game assets.
Valve went a little crazy with pre-rendered bits, I like it personally, I really enjoyed the art and was impressed with how far they pushed source, even though its looking a really dated compared to crysis 2, RAGE, Battlefield 3/Frostbite 2.0, UDK, etc. But well worth the $40/45 price tag on steam. Still a one sitting game, definitely longer and has more depth than the first.
This game is awesome! So funny, yet with such an awesome atmosphere, the new half-destroyed Aperture Labs are really looking sexy.
Oh and Valve are so generous, I had the Golden Potato, they gifted me the Valve Complete Pack (all the Valve games ever released), and for the games I already had, I got a giftable copy (including Portal 2)... That's pretty awesome of them.
Soooooooo... How do I make my own custom textures for the coop bots...?
Or am I supposed to pay through the arse just for those as well? Because I have to say, I'm not liking the store... At all. I beat the SP game (3 hours ish) and 100%ed it achievement wise, yet have a total of... One hat. Wow...
Gonna totally rape the coop later hopefully, but still, I saw the prices they were charging for some things and I was blown away at the cost...
EDIT: Don't get me wrong, SP game was bloody amazing, some of the best writing I've heard in a LONG time. Was a tad short, but then it wasn't supposed to be an action game, it was a puzzle game. Bit easy though, wasn't really hard (Compared to the first which I remember having a bit of trouble with).

the same way you would if they didn't have a store - modifying the game.
Unless I missed something, even during the "golden age" of skinning you had to make sure you & your friends downloaded the custom skins or the server admin had to have skin & model packs installed to push them to clients (which was annoying)
Not really up to speed on the Source way of how things work these days. I'm currently under the impression its impossible to use custom skins (That your friends can see) unless they are submitted to Valve for sale on the store?
Yeah, thats what I was thinking really. Back in the old days, it was a case of like Justin said, if the server has the file and you use it, everybody downloads it. But that was back in the day, when cheating wasn't as huge an issue as it really is these days as people couldn't be sold things if they were for free.
I'm guessing that the way it works is the same as the TF2 items, but again, not sure on that. I *think* you make the item, then submit it to Valve who check its up to scratch and then stick it on the store and they then make cash from it?

theoretically if people went on and just bruteforced the whole thing right now, it could be out by the hour.

Just a few more hours!

the cause is great but it is a scam none the less.
this goes to show how smart valve is and how stupid most people are.

but I still have a hour left to download the thing!
Edit: Bam, done decrypiting, hung at 32% then plowed though. Enjoy the game everyone!
I havent tried multiplayer yet but liking solo so far.
No bugs I've seen so far.
want.
That entire level had me in stitches. It was a perfect jab at all the people who got all hung up on the Companion Cube from the last game.

Edit: Nevermind, got it.
They have even more humor then you think Notch/Mojang and Valve seams to have a friendly little war :P
