Some of the items I like, although I'm not a fan of the bonus for wearing the set concept. The Sydney sleeper stats made me kind of sad though, I was looking forward to a legitimate sniper primary. Instead it's a purely body shot weapon (which a lot of people don't like) that leans towards players with not as good of aim.
I made this a little while back. It's not that close to being finished, so I decided to get some feedback to see what I need to change/add. (excuse the not so fantastic picture).

You were correct with your first guess, and thanks. I don't really know what to add to it now, it still seems somewhat plain, but I guess the normal flare gun isn't really that complex either.

All i think that you could add would be an interesting striker or a sight at the end of the barrel
I think you contributors that got their things in game without receiving your own copies, should email Valve to see if they can give it to you... they might have just forgotten o.o
Damn the polycounters are really tearing up the TF2 contribution scene
My sparring helmet also got accepted, and I emailed Robin asking when we would get the self-mades, but never got a real clear answer. At least we know for sure they didn't forget about us
"Yep, you'll be getting your self-made version as soon as I can get past the release issues.
What hat is that anyway, because it looks extremely similar (although better than) the wiki cap:
(No offense intended, I actually really like the cap as well)
And on a different note, seeing as they've now introduced 14 different paint cans for hats (and possibly weapons later), will community contributors now have to submit 16 textures? (Red+Blu+Paint Cans)
I want that heavy hat! That'd be sweet to have in game.
You won't have to make 16 textures, because paint-able hats right now have all the variants and I'm sure that the creator's didn't make all those textures. Apparently there is an issue though with having custom models and painting them, I believe it becomes dark red, I've seen some pictures (I haven't painted anything myself though).

It's based on the peaked cap that Stalin wore. I know it's similar to the Wiki Cap, but honestly, I think it's a bit better. I also think it wouldn't be hard to be better than the Wiki Cap.
As for paint colors, |Buddy| is correct. There is a mask texture in the alpha channel of the diffuse and the specular/alpha is in the alpha channel of the normal map.
This section of the Wiki Cap's VMT controls the tinting:
So Valve DID add color tinting to OB Engine... I e-mailed them if they would a few months ago because it would have been really helpful for a mod I'm working on but they said they probably wouldn't add it to OB because it could cause problems. They even said the TF2 team had been hassling them to add it forever. Guess they finally gave in and added it to OB Engine.
Yeah as Swizzle said, Orange Box engine. Coloring items based on a map in the Diffuse's alpha was a feature only available in AS (Alien Swarm) Engine and L4D2 Engine and when I e-mailed Valve they said they probably wouldn't add it to OB Engine because it would be too time consuming to sort out errors that it caused so I'm surprised that they actually added it in.
@IdleTard Nice job on the Vita-saw. I was browsing the wiki and read this:
"It very closely resembles the large needle syringe carried around by the Little Sisters from the game BioShock. Its name is also similar to the Vita-Chamber, a device which resurrects individuals who die in their vicinity, from the same game. Whether this was a reference made by the creators of the original model or a coincidence is not known.
Incidentally, Valve had to contact 2K Games for their legal consent to be able to ship the model in-game, due to its resemblance to the ADAM Syringe Little Sisters use in Bioshock."
I thought the second bit was a little humorous. Was it actually based off it, though?
Congrats on getting it in btw.
well, no badge yet, theme didn't get chosen to win... but i sorta got something in. Saw the drs dapper topper in the catalog and noticed the mesh looked familiar. YES! my hat just got reskinned. Except i don't have a sparkly version since doing 60-70% *model,uv* of the work doesn't mean i completely made it all. *sigh*
and yes, I know in the legal agreement they can do that, its just a debbie downer when I still can't get anything submitted completely.
none of the unannounced community contributors got their community items yet, so you could still get one...
Wow, oobersli, that kind of sucks. I would much rather have your version in game, I mean really, what makes more sense, a patriotic American Hat... or The Cat in the Hat's hat?
It would be cool if you at least get some credit
At least it didn't get in and then taken out but still left in the files like one guy's submission. He made a cool looking curved wrench for the engi.
Honestly, I think the Dapper Topper, in either form, looks a little ridiculous and unwieldy for any character. Don't get me wrong, it's well modeled... but I don't personally care for it.
On a different note, think the Scout could become Adam Savage?
On a different note, think the Scout could become Adam Savage?
The only problem is that Adam Savage has a more reasonable goatee that'd be impossible to do without just replacing the engineer's entire head. I could do the hat and glasses, though.
Update: Added some phong and rim light. I also fuzzied up his 'stache a bit.
Send them an email if you don't hear anything, Oobersli. You should get some recognition for the work you put in. They seem like reasonable folks. I wouldn't imagine they'd turn you down.
@Oobersli & others - i doubt they'd take your model, reskin it and not give you any credit.. just give em a while to sort out the issues with the update. i'm sure you, along with everyone else will get your items / pins... ps gratz to all those who got items in the game =] some really good work in this thread and on polycount =]
Yeah, it was heavily based on the ADAM Syringe in BioShock, that's why I'm surprised it actually got in, I couldn't believe it when Daimao told me our item got shipped.
The Hyneman hat looks pretty good so far. I think that the beard could use a little more saturation though, it looks very dull and gray (noted that Jamie's facial hair is somewhat dull/gray, but not that much so, it still has some color).

I can actually see that looking good if the facial hair went all the way down and around the chin.
Great stuff all around guys. Cool to see that more people got in than just in the main update. I really want to make more stuff now so that I can be included too.:)
Swizzle: That Jamie is priceless, it fits perfectly.
Looks like you're missing some particle sprites. Try deleting your materials folder, it'll redownload when it updates. If that doesn't work try reinstalling the game. If that doesn't work it's probably something with your video card or drivers.
I'd rather not delete my materials folder, that'd be too much work to re-install all of my skins that I have. I'll just wait to sort it out later, thanks though.

I'm guessing one of those custom skins is what's ruining your particles then... Custom skins/models usually also really reduce the performance of the game. Whatever though.
I don't REALLY think this is anything worth showing off, but I'm incredibly excited that I finally, FINALLY solved all my technical issues and got something I made to show in game. I may or may not complete this mohawk and make it worth actually giving it to people, as it was really just a simple model for me to get everything working, but who knows-- maybe people will like it enough.
I'm working on a hat right now, though I'm not sure if it's really tf2 styled. Even so, I'm using it for practice with textures and jigglebones, so it should definitely be a unique learning experience nonetheless!

It looks pretty good. Is it a flare gun?
If it's gonna be a pistol, you should make the barrel a bit smaller

I never got my special one in game!

Pretty much all of the item contributors in this update have yet to receive anything
Best hat skin ever
Daimao talked to Robin and he said they were getting there, so no worries.

YES YES DO IT YES!
A thousand barrels of win, fresh off the boat!

um, is... is that supposed to happen? Because it looks pretty bad. If not (I'm hoping) can I fix it?
and verify game files.
Now who should be Adam?...hmm...

@Zipfinator, yeah I know they do, but I'm not playing seriously or anything so I don't really mind not getting max speed.
@Base, no picture is appearing for me, I would like to see it though.
