Currently on my second year of a computer science degree and have been screwed in all the creative aspects of the course. Should have went with you guys... Ah well, from what i've seen being produced, I'll send anyone asking for a course to you guys.
Offsite learning is a tricky business as full courses would be hard to manage. You'd need something like what Cg-hub offers in its master classes but more structured for academics. Also If you broke up each year into three modules, students could buy a module at a later date if they run out of cash or run into difficulties at home.
Well keep up the good work and you may hear from me after this course.

Sorry to hear that, are you thinking of coming to do our MA?
I'm currently studying at plymouth college of art on a games design degree and am in my second year. In short -the course is appalling and a waste of time. So i have recently been looking into other courses in the uk that i could transfer to for my last year (or to retake the 2nd year aswell).
This course sounds exaclty what i've been looking for and what i was hoping my currenty course would be like.
I have a few questions and i'd be very grateful if you could answer them
- Would students from other degrees be able to transfer to the course into the 2nd or 3rd years?
- What would the talent / portfolio need to be at, to be accepted for a transfer?
- Would you say that the course is suitable for a 2D looking to get into the games / film industry or is there more of a focus on 3D?
- Also in the original post there are links to 2D / 3D parts of the courses, implying that the course splits up into the different disciplines at some stage, however those links no longer work. Would it be possible to explain a bit more about the course structure (sorry if this has already been explained)
Ok very interested in this! This seems like the perfect course for me. What are the course requirments for mature students, I am 22 which is usually classed as mature in UK. I have done media courses and have national diploma in game design, now looking to go to university for game art. My GCSE's seem to hold me back, which is slightly unfair given the type of course. College gave me benefit of the dout and aloud me on the course due to my portfolio.
I have recently been accepted to a foundation degree course based in Nottingham (where I live). I read somewhere in one of your posts that you sometimes refer students who have insuficiant qualifications to do a foundation degree, whould this have to be at Hertfordshire or would it be possible to get on the course following my multimedia foundation degree? (2 years). In my experience alot of courses in this subject are badly put together and usually ran by people who barely know what they are doing. This was extremelly frustrating for me during college as the teacher had no clue! And I have a really bad feeling I will be doing the exact same thing for the next 2 years!
I don't know if you look for feedback from your students work but I have to say the two trees in that UDK scene kinda ruin it. They're practically identical in scale and position.
That piece by Mark Ranson with the bright golden sun is really striking, very impressive.
Is it possible you could reconsider applicants for Sep 2012?
My younger Brother came to the Herts open day last year and loved the look of the course/campus so applied for the Sep 2012 BA. He got rejected based on the fact he didn't get above a C in Maths GCSE when he was 16.... but he's now 22 and set to gain distinction on a college level games course, and has a pretty good portfolio of trad art / 3D. He also got unconditionals from one other uni and conditional offers from two others.
Seems pretty silly, not to mention unfair to just straight up block someone from a games course because the don't have a low level maths grade, especially when they have a higher, related qualification and a portfolio.
Sorry to hear about your brother. Its university policy that students have to have C and above for GCSE Maths & English and 280 points from A level/Nation Diploma+ Foundation courses.
The University of Hertfordshire will accept the following qualifications in lieu of English and Maths GCSEs. There is something called Keyskills but I am not the best man to ask about administration you are best phoning the programmes office at the University of Hertfordshire as they can give you much more information.
From what I know these are acceptable but I am not sure for how much longer? English Keyskills Level 2 Communication,
Level 2 Functional Skills English or Open University pass in A or D prefixed courses Maths Keyskills Level 2 Application of Number, Level 2 Functional Skills Mathematics, Open University pass in M or T prefixed courses, AQA Level 2 Cert (GCSE) Use of Mathematics We are interviewing every Friday throughout the term. This year we have had to look through the paper work from over 1000 applications for 97 places. Best advice would be to tell him to post his work on www.3Dhit.co.uk and get feedback from staff and students and also talk to admin and find out what he needs to get in.
Ok thanks for the info, that's quite disappointing.
I understand that standard policy is standard policy, and indeed it is outside of your department, but having a blanket requirement across all subjects seems a little old-fashioned to me, especially in creative subjects. It's such a shame to shut-out potential talent (and conversely let in people with a lower level of artistic ability, who do have maths/english passes) based solely on academic qualifications, and unrelated qualifications at that!
I guess there is little more that can be done, hopefully for the sake of future applicants the policy is reviewed.

Thank you, I will tell them, in fact I just looked at their WIP thread and I see that they have updated it.
Some nice talks for you to view. We have talks every Wednesday 1-2pm and then sometimes a little professional practice which can be just a student showing their work for some feedback or a full on practice interview.

Can't you just point your students to Polycount so they can receive feedback directly from our community? I understand that you are showing off work from your students so that people will appreciate your university more and possibly try to enrol, but for the sake of the students it might be better to receive individual feedback on our forums.

Thanks Japhir, I do try
Lots of our students post their work on this forum but their are quite a few that are shy or keep the work close to them until they are towards the end of their studies. They only have a little over two and a half years to go from zero knowledge to as near as professional as possible so you got to feel for them.
One of your students was at the Blitz open day last month, and while showing his work for feedback I recognised it from Polycount. At the time I didn't realise it was this thread and asked him if he was on Polycount and he had no idea what I was talking about.
I then felt silly because I opened with, "Hey, I've seen your work on Polycount!".

Cool beans, just give them a clip around the ear from me are you going to take them on?.....Thats if the Soho film industry don't take them on first. They are picking up everyone at the moment, Its like a coal furnace but we can't shovel enough students into it. Framestore, Double Negative and MPC said they could take on 1000 staff tomorrow but just can not find the people.
