Here's my humble clay update, I guess I'll call it done.
Concept I'm working on for a WoW inspired Gnome Rogue... trying to improve my 2D skills. Anyone know how to make the top half of the suit not look crap?
I'm no expert on pinups, but I'd say just keep an eye on the proportions...
Ah nice one Vrav, thanks. Awesome gif too, looks a little like a dance
Yeah Paul Richards is a legend! I should go back and read some of the BabeLab posts, I struggled a bit with proportions since it's a gnome and they're kind of short and squat.
My main focus is the painting on the lighter half of the top, I can't seem to get it looking good. It's supposed to be a Lycra/Spandex kinda material but the shading just isn't working for me. I can't work out where the shadows/highlights would go.
Ahh, right. One thing that works for me, and this is only something I started doing very recently, but it helps a TON, so I have no idea why I never did it before.. is to place a white blob, arrow or perpendicular line in the general "location" or just directional location (think directional light in a game) on the image somewhere. This bright dot serves as a reminder to the eye, making it super easy to determine where form will receive light and where it will be in shadow, if you understand the contour of the object.
Kind of a two-dimensional reminder, since it doesn't really represent whether the light is in front or to the back, but that information can be stored in the head - since the depth of the lightsource is a single imaginary 'value', but the comparative direction constantly changing over the whole subject, having a sort of static, visual reminder of its placement or direction is super helpful.
As for the spandex, color choice plays a role; checking google images it seems there are a lot of different types with different sheerness and reflectivitybut after deciding on what you want (should there be a subtle bit of pink flesh showing through in the highlights, or is it opaque? etc), knowing your light direction will help. Also, don't shade with white and black - mess with the saturation too. I like saturated darks, even though they might not be scientifically accurate; sometimes they can be saturated, such as when a surface's light bounces back onto the same or a similar surface, ie blue surface + blue reflected light = more saturated... see the usual catch-all link, http://www.itchstudios.com/psg/art_tut.htm
Got bored, modeled some boobs, drank coffee...Good times were had.
There´s some hidden geometry that I can´t show because I´d get booted off Photobucket.

This thing's been really fun Can't wait to texture it.
Don't usually do any character stuff but school demands it so here. Still needs a ton of work.
