Hmm, I'd recommend delving into the science of shaders for a while before playing around with layers so you know what's going on behind the shader calculations to have more control over material definition.
Making the specular color the same color as the diffuse will make it look like metal. Wood reflects light in a way that it preserves the light source's color, usually white. Metal, instead tints the reflection with it's material color. Anyway, these sources explain it better and in more detail:
Stars, clouds, and water still need to be replaced with my own. The bridge may be turned into a log because it blocks more of the view than I'd like it to.
Looks good Luke but your lighting is letting it down, virtually no contrast in the scene. You need a dominant light from the blue sphere so It's emitting light, a point light with nice scale should do nicely, maybe even play with emissive lighting to add to the effect.
Some progress on that girl I've been working on. LeoCov's shader on the skin. Kodde's shader on the eyes.
I LOVED the initial sculpt you posted a while back, great seeing you do more with it, it is so incredibly sexy. You've done something very, very special here. Makes me wanna be a sculpter rather than an animator.

This is looking real nice, but the skin look disconnected from the hair and the cloth, some ao between these separate materials would go a long way to pull it together.
holy shit duncan, for your first polypaint that came out great. i love the subtle veins you have around the top of the head. what are your plans for the rest of it?
Learning to draw anatomy and painting. Crits are most welcome.
If you take anything away from N88tr's comments, it's that you should copy more. Get some reference up and study it.
Don't just trace over it like n88tr though, that's bad.
Duncan, first time poly-painting, that looks great! My next project will be my first approach to poly-painting as well. Did you follow any tutorials that you recommend?
Just finished my school semester so I decided to play around some with Sculptris. Was fun playing around with the rendering options and litspheres in the program.
I guess ill also add my dragonpics here, just finished for a sculpting contest pretty new at zbrush so the skin didnt come out the way i wanted, turned more out like a mix between scales and dinoskin:
Mechadus that looks stunning , altho i think its waaayyyyyy too busy , id rather see more shapes like the red "hull" ( dont know the right word eheh ) , covering some part of the machinery on the front , to give the eye some resting place . But its very solid nontheless !

This is a continuation of my failed Beat-Em Up challenge a few months back.

Agree with EQ on the disconnected look.

First time poly-painter. I love painting right onto the model but I think I need a lot more practice. To be continued......
This took FOREVER
