@RAWTalent, the biggest issue right now is, that there is no structure at all in it, it doesn't follow the mesh at all, its just some random hair texture placed on some pretty random hair mesh
just a quick mentral ray rendering of a character i'm doing for a shortmovie of some friends
Looks nice, and I know his eyes are probably intentionally small but they seem a little to much IMO and for some reason he reminds me of Jason Stantham :P, as for my hair it's hard because I can't find any hair tutorials other than actual 3DS hair
looks realy nice, i want to try doing real clay modeling sometime do you know any good beginner tutorials for it? Like what kind of clay you should use tools and basic techniques.
I'm a big fan of polymer clay sculpting. You can go over to the sculpting section of conceptart.org. They have a fantastic traditional sculpting section. Check out smellybug's tutorials. That guy isn't human....
I need to do another sculpt. It's been too long
Polymer clays are great, especially for people starting to sculpt because they are virtually mess free. Plus you have the option to bake and keep whatever you've made versus making a mold for it and casting it in a resin or what not. I would say the only downside to them is that the clay does go bad, and you sometimes have to knead it for like 15 minutes to work with it well. But also check out Plasticine clay and WED Clay. They're both super easy to work with, especially WED clay. Plus they cost less for the amount of clay you get.
As far tools go, don't underestimate the power of your two hands. Check out this Jordu Schell video, dude uses his hands for 90% of the video. Granted, he's a professional, but it's a good habit to get into.
But you can pick up a basic tool kit at most craft stores that has an assortment of loops and scrapers. But I would also feel out other things that look like they would be useful, one of my favorite detailing tools is an old manicuring tool. Sharpened paint brush ends also work well.

not my decision, the eyes might be tracked onto him in 2d later anyways, so it doesn't matter too much, but yeah they are intentionally small, beady eyes (? right word?) as for puppets or teddybears is the target, but it looked totally stupid without any anatomical lid around it - but we will see how it turns out, so far its planned to paint them entirely in 2d

Btw, I'm no character artist myself but I see a huge improvement over your previous characters. Obviously, you still have a long way to go and work on the anatomy but I noticed that you're getting a little bit better every time you post something new. Keep at it man! I wish I had started when I was your age :poly142:
and a quick deformation test, damn i thought i could cut out some loops but instead i have to ad a few new ones to have better control over the wrinkles :X
Wanted to Link for a while now, and with the Elder Link entry in the comicon challenge over at Gamerartisans it seemed like the perfect time to start one.
Just started blocking in the outfit, deciding if I want to sculpt the hair or if I want to use alpha's for it.
Hey guys! Great work in here as always! Here's another bit of work from my personal project. Just playing around with a character's head in Zbrush, trying out different expressions:
Neox> working well I think, could use some tighter deformation around the eyes though
yep i agree, thats why i need to add some more loops there, and maybe remove some others, not happy with a few of them damn poles, expecially around the mouth :X
Wow, catching up with this thread sure takes a long time! Some really great stuff here.
This is just an experiment of style and pixel-y kind of things.
@Nick Carver, AMAZING! Inspirational design and expressions. SAVED FOR REFERENCE. @Ultra, like it, very cool. Excellent work. Want to see it textured now.....

Look no further than Ben Mathis' (around PC he's called poopinmymouth) brilliant hand-painted hair tutorial. Also check out Paul Tosca's Varga Hair Tutorial.
Good luck!

Try this article as well as it shows the placement of planes on the mesh.

teeth are just placeholders

It was intentional but I'm going to change that. There's a flickering lens flair in the center but it's just sort of accentuating the popping look.
Cool stuff. Reminds me of this.
Apologies for the image dimensions!
Justin: thankie kindly

Nick, those are hella awesome..

Can you post a wire please?
If you know where this redesign is from, you win the 90s.
exo squad?
I like the crystals and low poly looking green flames. How did you make those flames, anyway?
@pixelchaot
I'd love to make something similar to this in 3d.
This made me smile

Didn't like 3Dcoat though, got the trial but it felt totally unnatural.
