I don't think I can start anything till Saturday at the earliest, but I just wanted to reserve a spot in case I can get something going this year. I haven't had a chance yet to put my ideas to paper but I have something rough in my head that I'm excited about working on. I want to do something that's in a bit of a different direction from my DWIII entry, just to try something new
I'm off to a bit of a late start so I didn't have time to do a nice concept. Scribbles it is! I really wanted to do something goofier than my entry last year, so I'm going for exagerrated proportions.
Here's my scrawled concept from lunch on Friday:
And my block-in from yesterday:
So basically he's this pyschotic gremlin who scampers around the battle-field hitting peeps with the business-end of his artifact (a battlehorn / hatchet hybrid) called Caterwauler. Either that or he just bites them square in the face. If he gets into a tight spot he can blow the horn to teleport to safety. The horn makes the wailing sound of a cat in heat, which makes him doubly annoying as he pops around the battlefield. Boofis is small in stature but is lightning quick, wiry strong, and is great as an advanced scout or decoy.
I also started the sculpt today but it's really rough, so I think I"ll hold off posting it till its a little better.
Haha that description sold it Lots of interesting stuff going on there visually, I love what you've done with the swirls on the horn, and his bendy neck. Face is awesome and captures his personality perfectly.
Looking cool, Jeremy. I really like the style and its on the complete opposite end of the spectrum from your entry last year.
Looking forward to seeing you develop this.
Hey, I thought you said you weren't doing another dw after how hard it was last year juggling work and the competition? Ha ha.
Well, I didn't make it any secrete that your entry was my favorite from last year, I'm really happy you are indeed getting after it this year also.
It's looking cool so far, I'll certainly follow this one. Good luck!
Thanks bro always a pleasure sharing work with you

Hey man, what can I say? I guess I'm a glutton for punishment Thanks for following my thread last year and for the words of encouragement again this year, much appreciated

I'm glad that you are liking his personality! I think he's a quirky lil guy

Thanks! I hope you enjoy the direction I am taking the sculpt

lol
This is still a wip, but just so you guys know I am toiling away (slowly)
that is so cool! while every ones characters are so huge, your guy will be going in between everyones legs cutting their Achilles Tendon. Then come back to finish the job.
wow man this is excellent he oozes personality. this guy has great balance of form in his face too, i dont know about him as a norm tho, looks a bit more demon to me.
Wow, thanks everyone for the overwhelming response... I really appreciate all the kind words! I've been blown away by all the positive replies

Thanks! I understand your concern that he might look too fragile. My goal is to get away from the big brutish type of characters and do something lankier and more agile. It is a balanciing act though and hopefully when he's done he will still look formidable even if small in stature.
AimBiz;
I'm glad that you like them, they were by far the most time consuming area to sculpt. They actually aren't quite done I just got intensely bored of working on them.
MoP;
Thanks! Now if I can just get to the level of polish you and Tully achieved in DW2 I'll be in good shape

Thanks man, I always enjoying seeing your work so I appreciate you commenting to my thread!

One of my top priorities this year is to focus on silhouette, I'm glad to hear you like it

You're one of my fav artists bar none so your comments mean a lot to me! Thanks so much

I'm glad to hear that his personality is coming through, I wanted something very expressive

Thank you, great work in your thread btw

Great idea I might steal that line for my description of him in submission
woogity;
Thanks man! I didn't categorize him as a demon because I really wanted to create something opposite from the demon requirements (20 ft tall, undead abominations bent on desctruction). I see this character as flesh and blood, diminutive stature, and with human emotions. He isn't evil - just mentally unbalanced He has horns and pointy teeth but for me the similarities end there.

I'm glad you like his artifact. The design is going to change a little bit I think, but I'm going to maintain the overall shape.

The horns took me sooo long to sculpt so it's great to hear people say they like them. Helps ease the pain of those late night hours

It's funny that you say that, I was inspired by greentooth for the face. Also by the creatures from the movie Gremlins, and the Hellboy2 toothfairy.
I debated posting this update cause it's pretty unfinished, but figured what the hell. I've been working on his torso area. The arms and legs are extremely rough at the moment. I also threw some quick armor blockins to the scene to help me visualize the volumes. I'm still not totally happy with the back so I'm figuring it out...
I have a couple other ideas for small gear additions, hopefully I will be getting to that stuff soon enough. I've got a lot of work at my job to take care of the next 3 days so I probably won't be getting back to this guy again till Saturday
he really reminds me of an organic version of the little stereo robot thing in transformers. It might be that cheesy grin which gives him a kind of mischevious look. Cool stuff.
!! that is all ....haha jk, the armor groups are super well balanced, and your doing a great job of not covering up his organics, which is good caus the whole body is amazingly sculpted. the vine type structures from his elbows are interesting as well!

Head seems heavy. ~Considering the back, maybe add a bit more weight here - tail lengthened perhaps?

Reminds me of Sloth from Ice Age hehe.
