Figure the open mouth might give me some problems (more so) if i left it open and all, added a few separate parts...Still have tightening to do. Having more fun than I expected though, still just dickin around for the most part :P
Very cool concepts going on in this thread. Still tons of shit to do on mine, I just love hacking together messy low-poly glances along the way. Baking errors aplenty, presently ignored, but noted and easily (if tediously) resolved when the proper time arrives. Extra gear counts 496 tri, eheh. Where to put the final four... round out the crest peaks or something.

Good stuff guys!
I want to do you so badly right now...
Although i dont know about the nose part. I think i personally would prefer it "smooth" with nostrils than bulgy but thats just me.
Here's tonite's progress. I think I am going to have to take some polies out of the pipes on the side of his head to reinforce the face ... it is just too damned low poly...that or use the 18 polies I budgeted for wires.
Hey guys I need help changing the UV's for ol' Tunk here. Basically I want to scale down the body to make room for the gear - but Because the UV's are offset, I dont know how to shrink it and keep the opposite side the exact same size and place... Is there a 'proper' way of doing this?
Awsome work so far guys. It makes me a bit jealous, because I still need to learn Zbrush and modelling in quads. I'm still into old fashioned texturing and ultra low poly modelling.
fearian: delete either half of the model (the actual model yes). then adjust the uv's. then copy the model, and mirror it on the x axis. attach them together and weld the center verts back together. unwrap uv again and offset the new side by 1 (this is for better normal map creation).
but if you need only a little more space i'd just get rid of the bottom part of the uv's (scale it down drastically) because you probably don't need it at all.

You don't necessarily need to take the normal mapping route with this one. You could just texture it the oldschool way like you're used to. That's what I'm doing as well.
Great work by everyone, the standard is excellent. r4ptur3, I think we have to use the basemesh and not change it. How the models will look when normal mapped is really going to make or break the final renders.
Great work everyone! I'd love to comment on everyone of them but that would take too long so I just went back a few pages and moved my way up.
Jfletcher - Very nice! Love the colors
Irreal - looking good. It looks like it baked down pretty well
rooster - heh that is turning out nice. I dig the carapace like plating
DemonPrincess - can't wait to see how yours turns out.
morte - now that looks like an evil general. Love the gnarled mouth area
Painbringer - wow! Love it. I hope you can get that to bake down to one of the meshes
Fuse - That is actually pretty close to what I was thinking when I made that mesh, Nice work!
inchmale - That is a great direction for that mesh
RE3456 - Very evil! I hope you didn't cut into the chin too much. I think you can build up the collar just fine with the extra polygons but his mouth area worries me.
woogity - haha love it. I was thinking of doing a frog take on one of my doodles
wizo - yeah that baked down really nice. Love the face. The only thing that looks off at the moment is that little square bit above the back of his brow. I think it is fighting the geometry a little too much. Maybe adjust it to flow in a rising arc?
Gavimage - Kick ass as usual! Love the shrunken heads
EzMeow - Haha very fun! I hope that works out.
Vrav - Looks great!
fearian - can't wait to see what you do with that armor.
r4ptur3 - nice idea but i think it falls too far outside the scope of this contest. You still have to be able to bake that down to one of the supplied meshes.
erik! - there are a lot of good ideas in your. I hope you get over your boredom soon as it is looking really good.
Empty - that is looking soooooooooo kick ass!!!! One of my favorites so far!
vahl - another of my favorites. There is a lot of potential in that one
MightyPea - ha fun idea. When I look at yours upside down ... um right side up... whatever ... he looks great normal too!
wi_2 digging the colors already
SinisterUrge - I would work a bit more on getting his forms/anatomy tight before adding surface detail. I'm afraid he only reads as surface detail at the moment.
Hrmm...what do you guys think? Am I thinking way too far outside of the box? I am turning bobo's base mesh into a collar and shoulders... and then spending my 500 polies on a head and tubes. Not sure if I should keep going in this direction if everyone thinks it is a terrible idea... it all meets the criteria, but I know I am bending the rules hardcore. Ready ... set...feedback, go!
some people have started to talk about normal maps and how well they are fitting. i like to transfer mine to check every time i save. i also like to put the normal map on as a texture to see how some things are working and moving without seeing the relief of the normal mapping. here it is...
Hey r4ptur3 I really like your design man. It's rad. However it looks like you have deleted most of the original mesh, which your not allowed to do. You can add accessories on top of one of the base meshes, but can't alter it in any way
it is still all in tact, no verts moved...I think I am going to go in a different direction. It is confusing way too many people lol. Thanks for the input!
r4tur3, don't ditch the idea just yet. I think it's confusing because you haven't shown all the pieces together. In the end, it might work, it might not, but it worth a try.
Unfortunately I don't have the reliable tools at home to do this at the moment so I've been relying on spare time/after hours at work. Hence the slow start.
Here's the bash mesh with additional gear which hits the 500 mark exactly, but that's without optimisation
I plan on going Zbrush Crazy with this guy so it's gonna be a lot of fun as I haven't played with the program in too long.
r4ptur3 - Don't you dare ditch that idea! It was one of the more inventive uses of the base mesh I've seen thus far
I'm gonna go ahead and say that the pain has in fact been brought. Really love the feel of this man! Aggressive, alien, and dynamic! Only thing is that the exposed cut off arm/bone look sort of makes it look like a butcher shop item more than a bust. :P
You Polycount guys always have to make this stuff look so easy. Some really crazy work coming out of this side. I enjoy the lurk so keep it up guys, Beer and chips and polycount lurking all in a good days work.
Im true to my colors @ Ga but ill share some of my work with you guys since I respect your crits.
Really nice work in this thread.
Here is an update of the progress I made. Not sure where to go with his armor, and at the moment it doesn't have a general feeling/look. But so far I'm actually quiet happy with the progress
What most guys dont see is what r4ptur3 is doing with his mesh. I didn't realise it until I took a better look at it. He is actually using the BoBo mesh (short stumpy one) and not any of the other 2. He is just adding a neck and head to the mesh to completely change it. It's pretty clever actually.
Anyways, r4ptur3, i think it's a really neat way to think outside of the box. Is this mini competition for any prizes even? In any case, it's definitely original and unique!

i need to bring my "A" game to keep up.
so i thought i would get an early start

Will try to enter soon!! On Bobos mesh for sure!!

Some tweaking and poly pushing and I've got the armour done exactly on 500 polys.

re34546- diggin the GoW style
gavimage - i agree with kamui, nice hat:)
EzMeow - cool minotaur!
Just getting my bearings.. Don't know if I'll keep it in Mudbox or do some sub-d in Max. the eyes/goggles and the tubes will be separate pieces.
edit: also, I got bored.
Keep it up guys some great work coming out of here.
Very wipp
Any help appreciated!

Skeleton-alien-guy with exposed brain. General von hivemind-dude. There'll be glowy stuff and slimy wires etc...
Nice and cliche for me this time
Beautiful.

comments and crits are always welcome :P I have a coral shoulder pad in the working aswell as some other things
My second wip:
Extra bits still to go on
