@DemonPrincess: I agree that there's a hugh improvement in the diffuse map with those new details. I like the background in your render aswell. Did you use cgtextures.com?
Just thought I would mention that I looked through all the entries from different forums and I honestly think polycount will hold quite a few of the top spots for this challenge. The main competition appears to be from cgsociety and game artisians.
Here's a couple more that I reckon are pretty awesome. I agree with Brad though, Polycount has some very strong contenders and the overall standard is very high here.
yeah congratulations everyone who finished and everyone who took part, it's been a fun warmup!
coldkodiak - that's a great design, really like the holo face and silhouette
vidar - top work, it's nice to see someone really making use of all that texture space
kiripiri - awesome! fungal aztec death guy
prototp3 - hey proto! lovely diffuse on your entry, great to see you posting stuff again. Yeah going with PC this time, i've been a closet regular since cgchat folded really. Practically everyone on my msn list seems to have turned green lately too, why fight it
Wow just to think this mini comp was a warmup for the main even, I am really anxious see what Polycount can pump out for the main challenge. Very inspiring thread, amazing work!
EDIT: Heres a more polished presentation for my entry, rendered in 3dsmax instead of crysis.
They are looking like cracking entries. Shame its too late to get them in. They would have really boosted polycounts chances of dominating the mini challenge. Still great work though.
seriously great work, some really strong competitors for polycount. something dissapointing though is that cant find jfletchers final entry anywhere but did see it entered a whilst back. would a terrible shame if it missed out
Sorry to say this JFletcher but I don't see it either. Its not looking good. I thought it might have gone to the 2D concept section but it ain't there either.
Hey Jfletcher, I voted your entry #1, hope it will boost you back up a bit(besides that, I also I think it is actually the best!)
My top 5:
1: Jfletcher
2: Snefer
3: Matt#
4: Mynkijames
5: mrkite
Pffff.... I dont really have time to fill in any other more votes, IMO they should just drop all those 5-entry forums and make their users register at one the forums from last year
thanks jonas, it's just a max scanline render - 4 standard spots with mid-range ambient light
stefan - thanks stefan, there's probably a simpler way of doing it with zbrush 3 but my process is - create a 16bit displacement map, open that in photoshop, save as psd, Import that as an alpha, select your material of choice and in the alpha pop up window select cropandfill document. It's not ideal as it bakes in some lighting information, so you need to overpaint to avoid clashing. good for spec though!
Pretty awesome approach. I can't figure out how to remove all the seems though. You using MultiDisplace? And if so what code are you using?
stefan - hehe I wish I could claim to have invented the technique but I stumbled across the idea on zbrushcentral, not sure who came up with it originally.
Jbrophy - I use D16 DE-FBAK-EACADA-D16. Might need to give the displacement map a thicker fringe if you are getting seams? You also need to be quite careful about how you lay out you uvs because the light is cast arbitrarily across the map according to the material settings. So if you have a rotated uv chunk it will look a little odd.

Oh man that is amazing, you truly are the master. I'd like to know what kind of render setup you ended up using as well.
@ Kite
Man there are no words for your awesomeness.

Damn that's the best thing I hav seen you make. Awesome!

Looks great none-the-less, are you still entending on texturing it?
Speaking of which, the instructions tell us to pick our favorite 3, but the drop boxes allow you to pick 5. What's up with that? :poly111:
Vote for the win!
Kinda strange voting on forums that have less than 5 entries though... :poly111:
Bravo to all, great entries here.
Its tempting to vote for poor entry's in the enemy forums so they will get smoked in the finals :S
I'm not going to do it, seriously. But it would be better if we could only vote for our own forum.
i submitted it way ahead of time and isn't on the page now...strange, it was there before, and im sure some people can confirm that
EDIT:
or is it just not showing up on the page to prevent people from voting for there own stuff? :P
got me worried then, thought it was erased from mini-comp (i hope not at least, heh)
you should probably email FredH about it -> fredh@dominancewar.com
Maybe you should ask the admin there.
oh well I've emailed fred, hopefully can get it back up online before its too late
today i tried EQ and the gangs viewer,, a lot better than the maya viewport that i took my presentation pics in atleast hehe
its freakin amazing thanks a lot.
how the hell did you figure that out?

Snefer's is my favorite, just so damn detailed.
Good luck everyone.

Aw man, it sucks that it dissapeared, I was looking for it aswell, it was one of my absolute favorites. I hope it gets through anyway. And thanks alot
