hey, Swizzle, awesome work so far. one thing that interests me though, did you try inverting the shape of the wooden stools legs ? so they are the thinnest in the middle and get wider to the outer ends ? i don't know i think something along these lines might fit better, cause it disturbs me a bit, right now, somehow. all of the rest is superbe !
This is my first 3d model ever! I don't have any education or prior experience, so any tips or advice is very, very much appreciated.
There is excellent work on these forums, what a crowd!

I actually considered doing something like that with the legs of the stool, but it didn't seem like it'd look right. I may fiddle with them a little more, though.
Got a little texturing done on this thing. It's still mostly base colors and AO except on the top and legs of the table.
While I really like the look of the floor, it's also kind of getting on my nerves. There are going to be a lot of warm colors once this is done, what with the candles, books, wooden table, etc., so what I may do is redo the floor as big stone blocks for a bit of color and material contrast.
I think your right swizzle. As soon as I saw that first texture pass i was like , "whoa, lotta brown".
Stone would totally help offset the colors. Or you could add a colorful carpet underneath the table and even have it hang a little bit over the floorboards.
Nice texturing Alec, and nice subtle lighting - when you say viewport shader - is this literally a screencap of the viewport? How do you hide the gizmos etc?
@Swizzle - looks fantastic - one small thing was that since changing to the wooden floor, the dynamic has changed, perhaps keep the wooden floor, but make it round. Sorta like this, but 100 times better. At the moment it looks a bit like it's sat on a palette ( but this could just be due to the lack of a texture)
Work on Delorean - guess this is too large now for the game-art thread, cut out 50-75 polys from the body of the car, but the plutonium fuel cell thing cost a lot of tris.
JohnnySix: The grid is turned off and I don't have anything selecting. Additionally I have safe frame on so the little 'perspective text' is not on my image area.

We have a rug. An unfinished rug, but a rug nonetheless.
Most of the textures are still just base colors, but whatever. I realized as I was working on this that I've never really done much texture painting that wasn't going to be affected by specular, normals and other stuff, so it's all very new to me. It feels a lot more like drawing or painting. I think I like it.
Swizzle, why not simply have the different wooden pieces be slightly different shades? The floor being bare wood, the table having a rough sealer, and the stool a different sealer would be enough to make them different...

Just curious...whats the workflow for "Hand painted"? Do you print out a uv layout and paint acrylic on an acetate? Or is the definition used for painting digitally in PS or painter?
katana - the definition of hand painted in this instance is to manually paint the colours/textures in pshop, as opposed to using photo reference as overlays.
Generally hand painted is for more cartoony stuff.
@ JohnnySix Man that awesome low-poly modeling skill you got...
@ Swizzle looking sweet..Color on mat look dull..or maybe it because it in base color...
Working on this guy...
That's looking great, Sandro. I like the hair, but it seems like you could do something a bit crazier with it to break up the silhouette a little. Maybe try not having him quite so bald and put a bit of hair on top?

I've actually considered doing that for other projects, but what I mean by hand painted in this case is that I'm doing everything in Photoshop with no outside references, no texture overlays to get the details I want, that sort of thing.
Base man - been staring at this for far to long today, it could use some fresh eyes on it. Any comments would be great. Still getting things in the right place at this stage!
I've been swamped with doing art test. But I had a week where I had no test scheduled and figured I'd do a personal test.
I gave myself one week to sketch out a concept, model, uv map, create the high-res assets, texture, and get it all working real-time. There is a bit more I'd like to do, but I'm out of time.
I hope the image isn't too dark 'cause I've a different result on my two screens. It's fine on the one I'm working on but on the other one it's very dark and I can't see any details on the cloth.
Clothes (and the head in a really minor part) are based on this conte's sketch :
I'll probably do a quick low poly on that before Unearthly challenge begins.
Thanks Swizzle, sounds like a good idea. I think I'll go for some sort of flowing patch of hair close to forehead. I don't feel like covering entire skull, want to keep some of bald and blocky feel intact : )
Cool sculpt Massbot. Don't forget to add some pinchy sharp strokes near areas where forms overlap.
Really loving that little scene, Swizzle, very cute
Haven't been doing too much lately, too much time at crappy job sucking out my motivation. That aside, had to do a painting for my mom for my parent's 28th (i think) anniversary.

Colours and canvas and all looks better in real life, but what ya gonna do :P
Damn adam, I really do appreciate your style. Very economic use of detail and sharpness, concentrated there where it will have the most impact.
This girl has a slightly bloated-looking face, but I actually like that. It seems like a deliberate thing, rather than something that could be called 'wrong'.

Thanks for clearing that up, I guess I was looking to deep into it...

Agreed, though I'm not sure how I feel about the nose. When I first saw the bust, I thought it was supposed to be a little boy because the nose seems more proportionate to somebody with a small head. The shape of it is also kind of odd as well.
Other than the nose, though, the whole thing's pretty damn cool.
Decided to run with this. It´s slightly more refined since it was in the speed-zbrush thread.
Will try and make a character from it. I never do character work so I´m very rusty. Good thing there´s shitloads of talented people at the company I can harass.
Not entirely happy with the chin to mouth ratio yet. He´s called lunchie. He is a wandering salesman that sells cookies and sweets from a box on his stomach. He will be furry!
hey man, the explosion should probably have a more gradual (but really fast) progression in terms of size, and pieces should start flying all over right at the first explosion.
the minigun would look much better if the muzzle flash was smaller but more chaotic and just one flash, and not those 12. plus it probably would be better if it was on the top barrel. you have to take into account what shapes the muzzle flash ( the shape and size of the barrel, if it has any holes, etc)

Yeah, yeah, lots of work to go, but at least I got the "feel" - and it only took me about two hours to whip up so far.

Great stuff - just tried it out on the Delorean lol - not got shadowing working, but looks great with spec added.
yeah, I made an LDR file from one of my HDR locations and mapped it to a sphere.
Getting shadows to work is detailed here:

they are picky about when they decide to work but I sometime find that having the light source selected helps.

Sort of like :
Think the Delorean is pretty much finished now. I could have made better used of the texture space, maybe next time for the flying BTTF II version.
I love it (her) Zwebble.. Finishing stuff is overrated !
Here's some updatey
I think I'll add this

Thought i would continue the zsketch model i did yesterday http://boards.polycount.net/showpost.php?p=996549&postcount=642
model is just under 7k will probably give him a gun tomorrow if i get time.
Just scribbles, trying to come up with a concept.
Messy concept art? I don't care, I'll pull down your underwear.

Working on a female bust for some more texturing practice. Still need to add proper eyes and hair. Sculpted, textured, and rendered in Mudbox.

image removed, hardly a lot done..lol
Also, I saw it. It a was a good start.
Pussy.
i started a sketch thread over pimping & previews figured I'd share this here as well.
its a more animal-istic-ish?? take on beast from the X-Men
