more planes rendering, less "licking"
focus on the big forms, if u render the front of his brow-plane in a certain way u should do the same for his nose and so forth down, its all the front plane of the head, which is being struck from lightsource x. just think of this rather than dwell into the bitsy pieces, and u'r drawings will get a significant boostage
admittedly i rendered him more front than u did, but u get the point (hopefully)
I like the small studies mostly more than your big pictures because they are a great mixture of hard and soft areas and transitions while the big and clean painted pictures are more just oft and too clean - in my eyes. They are great! But i love the bravery in the small ones.
I hear you, shotgun - I wasn't licking it as such, for the most part i tried to keep the planes defined with minimal strokes. A lot of the reworking was because I was uncomfortable with the image as a whole and no amount of tweaking will solve that problem so i'll start it again at some point.
Simon, i feel the same way and its probably part that and part lack of knowledge that prevents me from rendering or defining my pictures better... frustrating limitation maybe. I dont really know what to do when I sketch something and it feels just right, I rarely portfolio that kinda stuff as its really sketchy and It feels like pushing them further will kill what life there is.
No..no, I have to side with suburbbum, this.has gone... TOO FAR!
Srsly, jack, the fog(smoke, both?) in that blue green/pink scene feels heavy.
I love the contrast you achieve with those soft, pillowy elements and the harder edged silhouettes. I struggle with maintaining those crisp outlines while fusing atmospheric elements with them. Really like to see how you go about some of that..maybe in your next pod cast?
one day ill make something really fucking cool thats not a blatant derivative piece, i really need to just try and crank on and problem solve by myself for a while to work out whats what.
Lawl saya, podcast.... haha, i just doodled on there at the moment but if you happen to pick up anything that i do then maybe itll be of some use. As is its more for my sake as it stops me procrastinating.
Infact i feel like tinkering with that pink picture for a while so I might as well stream it while i do, doubt itll be overly interesting as its pretty much polishing and pixel pushing.
Been tinkering with 3d stuff, figured id finally learn that with the help of Razorb > it'd be nice if 3d didnt have a retarded barrier to entry with the wall of menus/text and unintuitive roundabout way to do things.
Still, once ive got the basics down ill probably be happy to extrapolate from that.
Cheers man, the custom shapes thing is something that the steambot guys like vyle/viag do as well as mandryk. Its a fun and quick way to work and you can get interesting results if you use them in tandem with layers/locking transparency. I've been making a mess and just playing around with them lately, not attempting anything constructive.
I mostly use other peoples brushsets, whether or not I use the brushes as theyre intended is a different matter! I've made my own customshapes though, mostly from vector photos or abstract messes.
My brushes are in my signature though (I got asked a lot so I thought that would resolve the problem) I also use a mixture of brushes by m@, tom scholes, algenpleger, barontieri, jaime jones... the usual names.

But seriously, wicked sketches man. Always a pleasure.
~ FUCK YEAH NEW PAGE.
I dunno why but i find this really amusing haha.
I'll dump a rough initial sketch done prior to sketching out some props for context!
You seem to use vector/custom shapes alot in your work. Quite a good idea actually.
Edit; I new I recognised some of the form's, Good old bridgeman

I love the solid shapes in these Getting some art deco vibes almost.

great feeling of the sun on that skin
More modular/tileable assets, thanks to suprore/twolisten/marine and co for the suggestions.
Playing around with colour/saturation/contrast, could benefit from being more deliberate with these and digging deeper!
Concept tag.
