Clint(I don't feel like spelling it your wonky way)
Alpha maps are simple, just take your texture, make everything white, anything you don't want to be seen, make black. Anything you want to be see through, make it grey (value depening on how see through you want it). You then just go into your max matrial editor, and on the maps list (like where your diffuse and what not is) and under the opacity slot, load your alpha map into it. And bam, it's done.
Alright lets just hope blizzard's cool. Due to my email being fucking stupid, my submission revamp was 5 minutes past the deadline. Here's the main image.
hm..i think that the lightning hitting the rock is bringing it down, there should be a huge concentration of light in that spot and some rock chunks etc, right now it seems like vapour or something
Katz, I know it's already locked and submited but I think I finally understood what was bugging me about that flash of lightning.
It seems like it was done using a photo taken from far away as a reference (like many storm lightning pictures are : it is obviously very rare to take an upclose picture of such an event).
Because of this I think it looks a bit out of scale on your image. I would love to see some perspective distorsion making it thinner at the top of the image. Hard to describe, hope you see what I mean.
Well awesome everybody! I love the way contests bring some peeps out of the wood work, and just heap a mountain of cool stuff! I'm really glad we could do this
Haha, Katz. I did not wait until 5 minutes after to send it. I clicked the send button 5 minutes before the deadline (I know cutting close),and for some reason it took 10 minutes to send the damn thing. Oh well, I'll still email them about the confirmation if I don't receive one today as well.
I'm really digging the smaller additions you put on the piece. Like the skeleton and the birds. Very Nice.
Texture flats (Diffuse, Normal, Spec, Self-illumination) Head Body Accesories Weapon Effects
These are also all scaled to half of their normal resolution.
Well now it's over.
So Good luck everyone! This has resulted in a plethora of awesome work!
and I'm still totally up for the idea of the assassin and necromancer fighting Diablo in the cathedral.
i seriously doubt that spelling mistakes will be judged , you could have written zqweqwwq instead of triangles that i doubt they would notice eheh , its a piece that rocks :P
Yeah, it's been mentioned. I knew it was going to be compared when I did it. But it was a design element I wanted. If you look at both modesl together, the only similarity in design, is that they both mean looking faces with their mouths open. Oh well. I guess Forsaken shall forever live in Corum's shadow.
As far as the background is concerned, I tried doing it different ways, but each time I did it, it wasn't looking that good. Lighting is just not one of my strong points, and I enjoyed the way it looked like he was just coming out of the darkness. Ideally, I would have liked a whole dungeon environment lit around him...but alas, you know?
I mean, I included other shots of the model in a regularly lit area, this wasn't the only picture in my image of him.
that's the 114th time i've seen that comment since Corum was born.. anyone would think rockstar invented armour with demonic facial features and I don't really like that perception.
I do agree with Fuse on the BLACK background though.
Does anyone know if the entirety of entries, or anything other than the just the winners once they're selected will ever be viewable? I'm so anxious to see all the entries! I was hoping they'd make them publicly viewable once submission closed.
bwahahyahahahahaaha!!! Demonic armor with skulls and facial features COPYWRITED!
lol well ok i guess the fact that corum was diablo 2 inspired didn't help either. neo i think yours looks cool, I think the weakest part of your entry is the lighting, the guy's got some cool looking armor, but you can barely see it because its not lit very well, to be more specific i'd add a rim light to show off the silhouette and some of the detail on the armor, but thats cuz i'm a rim light whore rim lights make everything instantly better especially really bright ones.

Thank you and best of luck to all who participated and submitted artwork for the first annual Blizzard Art Contest. Our judges are now in the process of reviewing the thousands of entries we received to determine the finalists and prize winners. Stay tuned -- all winners and winning artwork will be posted here by October 31."
Since I've had a few people ask me, here is a link to the full resolution image of my entry...
And here are my texture layouts... These arent totally up to date but they're close, and I'm too lazy to make new ones Any of the game res guys might enjoy the UV packing
Thousands! Thats a hell of a big turn out for an art contest. I wish there was a way we could view all of them, because Ive only seen like tens of them, Hah!
oh cool, I hadn't noticed the various sea creatures and incorporation into the design, that's really cool. Though it's too late, my one crit with this entry is that it is extremely busy. I really like the color and the attention to detail, but overall it's pretty hard on the eyes. Enough infact, that I hardly noticed the attention to detail until I saw the skulls, fish, and lizard on the UVs. Anyway, your character is by far my favorite, I hope you'll grab some loot for it
Foreverendering, I really love your entry, but don't you think it's kind of cheating to use a model you have been working on for months before the blizzard contest even started? I saw the work on this a long time ago on CGTalk. http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?p=3340188
There isn't anything in the rules about not using artwork that you've been working on prior to the initial entry date. I can't see any issues arrising from it.

Kickass nonetheless!

Here is the other stuff
Wire

Head
Body
Accesories
Weapon
Effects
These are also all scaled to half of their normal resolution.

other minor crit would be the use of a black background .. i think it really affects the optics of the viewer.
Excellent work nevertheless

.. It's not that using demonic sculpts on armor pieces is imitative .. but in this particular case i found it just a little too similar ..

Its really not that similar.
good luck everybody!

Yeah, I'm going to guess like 800 of the entries are WoW 2d fan art.
