killingpeople: very flattering, I do wish I could keep up with you. You've got a style that really sets you apart, that's something I really admire.
Was nice to have met you as early as I did.
Forgot to mention, Makkon: I love that design on worriorettfix.jpg
I love that body, but the head lets the figure down a bit.
He doesn't really look like he's in the scene.
I think it could be alot of his shadows don't mimic the brown environment, and they're darker then most of the background.
Might help to bring it into focus by adding some (lighter maybe?) brown ambient color to some of the shadows, right now I also think you're loosing to much of the original color, you could also tie in some of the sky grey to balance the two a bit.
Everything is real superb, I don't know if you're still working on it, so forgive me if these are things you've already had in mind.
thank you, cep. it was an excellent crit; i will possibly revisit the piece later. for now i'm just continuing to better my familiarity with painter. it's finally starting to feel comfortable and fun!
and with all the shambler-itis going around, it couldn't be helped:
First post here in a long long time...not that anyone would remember me...
I tried out your pencil-brush settings Snowfly, and I couldn't get the same results...Is there anything I could be doing wrong? I've got CS2 and I followed your settings exactly...I'm dying to get it working
Alright, first post of mine with anything in it. I'm a junior in high school, as of this point I've just learned from looking at the works of other peoples (often times you guys). Hopefully with more time on my hands I'll be able to dramatically improve, but here's what I've got right now.
This one I'm calling a stumpmidget.
Here's a sketch that originally I thought would end up in my trashcan, but I figured it would be decent enough for photoshop painting practice.
After painted:
That's my third attempt to paint anything of substance in photoshop, and I hope to be able to improve on several things once I purchase a tablet later this weekend. It'll take time and practice is all I suppose. Either way things like this are good for simply becoming more familiar with the program.
I really like the second sketch, but I think his legs look like a cop-out. Sort of tacked on. Give him some legs that match the rest of him. Really digging his head/arms, though.
Hey Sandbag, what kind of tablet are you using? I'm trying my pencil settings with a graphire4 and it's pretty crap. I can only get it to look right with my intuos3.. and anyway those settings are a hack. Oh well. You could try the free version of ArtRage2 if you wanna do pencils.
I'm using a Wacom Graphire2(boy how old is that)...so I guess that explains why. I didn't realize that the additional levels of pressure sensitivity you'd get from the intous3 would affect something like this.
Thanks for the reccomendation of ArtRage2, is that more like photoshop, or closer to Alias Sketchbook?

does stump-midget have a mohawk?

Haha, they look tacked on? Well you bet they do, they were tacked on. I don't have the experience right now to effectively be able to pull out full peoples typically, I don't have an idea for anything when I start. Each sketch starts out and then uh...develops as I draw the rest of it's body. With that one I did the upper half and really enjoyed it...then I totally had a block and couldn't think of a decent way to give him a lower half that would match. So I went with the stupid relatively overused spider bit for the lower half.
Now that I think about it, legs are always my problem. Upper halves are always easy for me to come up with but damn I can't think of decent looking legs to put on anyone. ...damn I'm depressed now that I've realized none of my sketches are with legs (or decent ones)...
