on the topic of custom brushes--i'm not going to share the actual brushes, since it seriously takes like less than 20 seconds to define your own and it's much more rewarding. and the "look" of these pieces really isn't so much from the brush choice, it's the use of layers set to overlay and then unsharp masking at the end, among other things. go to CA.org, the exclusive content forum, and see how El Coro layers some of his work. very instructive.
ok, so i won't give you the brushes themselves, but here's a sheet of brushes i made just before sampling. so if you MUST, then sample some of these (marquee over a pattern, edit-->define custom brush), but you're better off rocking your very own custom sauce!
reaaachin' all the way back to page 6 for darksun's animegirl. somewhere along the way she turned into rachel from blade runner? dig the 80's colors, yo.
I can't draw so I won't buthcer anyones concept just yet. But I would like to post something I'm actually fairly happy with and maybe I'll try my hand at some unfourtunate concept tommorrow
i think you've come to the right place, then. if you hit a wall, just go ahead and upload it where you stop--sometimes it really helps to see how another artist might run with it. glad to see you in the thread

Bizarre technique, Gauss. Is that laying down a bunch of seemingly random imagery, website dumps and so forth, under your painting something you usually do? Whats it all about?
Jackablade: not always, no, but that's pretty much how I approach many of these concept tags. It's a "random sed" type approach because you're counting on a certain amount of unpredictability from random sources--like that random internet garbage (resulting from a google image search for "sunlight shadow"). On page six, I used the same technique but in more of a color overlay fashion to produce this drawing: http://www.gausswerks.com/img/randomseed1.jpg
while the design is something I might have drawn otherwise, those are definitely not color choices I would have struck upon my own. It's all just a technique to give your work a little spice
Just registered, I'm a friend of dejawolf's. I'll have more things to post around tese forums in a bit. In the meantime, here's a concept I threw up in college a few months back:
nah, i just thought it sounded good, you only get two dimensions:
SLACKER>Firestarter>Pea
edit: the incompetently sharpened doodle you see scribbled into yonder right top corner is what it looks like from the side. yes, that's a beak, of sorts.
edit: and here's a very, very old image of myself, just to comply with Herr GAUSS's laws:
There you go!
I took some liberty with the naming, just to get back at Crash. I'm petty YET ingenious like that.
edit: this is a results of toying around with some custom brushes.
I might share them if i add some more, since i stole them all from the internet anyway, with liberally applied anti-suck sauce.
God knows i'll just lose any custom stuff i do anyway, because i scorned His son or something.

This is good practice since I usally doodle for ten seconds before thinking, "fuck this is going nowhere" and starting over.

That would be an album with a lot of reverb.

the fun part is that i made a progress gif out of it, too, with plenty of "random seed" action visible. (linked for size):

google image search is the source my ultimate power though, it's true.

Thanks Gauss for being awesome with the custom brushes! This one was just so much more fun when you made your own tools.
you tag someones sketch then offer up an old sketch of your own, thus making the cycle complete.
too much of "I drew this recently guys, wadda you think!!" is watering this thread down.
So with that lukewarm excuse, I present to the public:
Now I'll play with the corpse.
