After the most recent concept challenge over in the challenge forum (which needs more people, btw!), i realized how much i enjoyed reinterpreting concepts. don't get me wrong, i enjoy making concepts 'ex nihilo' plenty, but there's a special kind of joy and challenge in reinventing or reinterpreting an existing one. paintovers and the like, it's just a lot of fun. for example:
3dguy's 'cup ninja' from last week's challenge:
my corpsebot concept that started out as a paintover of Makkon's excellent looking mummified zombie model:
THE RULES:
1.) you start by posting something old. original drawings or screencaps of original models only, you can't post someone else's work or commercial artwork. crappy old drawings or models you're embarassed of now are extremely encouraged! if it's a drawing, the less finished the better. doodles and quick sketches preferred. for model shots, try to post shots with no textures. You can post 3 or so drawings, more if they're collated onto the same image.
2.) once you've posted one of your own drawings, you're free to interpret -anything- else in the thread. anything anyone has posted in here, including reinterpretations. the sky's the limit!
3.) you may not post more of your old concepts (step 1) until you've finished participating yourself (step 2)
4.) when posting an image, please show whoever's gone before you. for example, i'll probably take a crack at cep's concept, which is a re-concept on a drawing i did which was based on Kristian's drawing. so i would post the following:
Kristian > gauss > cep > gauss
this just makes it more fun to keep track of how many times a concept has been processed. i want to see a drawing get 5 or more
so if you'd like to see me (or somebody else) take a spin on an idea, go ahead and get your drawings posted.
also.... Killingpeople, i sure as hell expect to see your ass in here doing some crazy stuff
so that i can participate in this thread properly myself, here's an oldie:
Buzza was a character i created at the end of high school. i still love the character but i never came up with an iteration of him i was really happy with. have at it!

Go ahead and tear her up a bit.
I'm at work, so I can't post any redraws I do until tonight... but I do have my sketchpad right in front of me!
The second image is a sketch of the back, the ovals with the black lines are supposed to hold "feathers" that are in one line when inactive and spread out like an angel's wings when the main cannon is charging...
Dunno, turned out too much like Canti from FLCL, I hoped to make him look more menacing instead.
somewhere along the way it started to look a little like the chick from tribes:vengeance. oh well.
EDIT: FTP's not working right now, all in one line should suffice until i can upload the combined image.
So alright! some old sketches that never quite got anywhere:
and!
how sassy!
Love the stuff that was posted so far.
Unfinished model...
KDR: yeah, you might want to edit that last post to have not quite so many doodles--or better yet, collate them onto a single image instead of so many. that'd be ideal.
but! i did run with the robot design you first posted. that's the kind of drawing i think is ideal for this thread--not overly resolved, so there's plenty of room for reinterpretation.
This has the potential to be a really refreshing thread.
but still it looks fucking awesome.
Mad (multiple typos warning) Silloutte!
Nice face lift you too Kristian, good job.
Funny thing, we spoke about the exact same idea at school last week : swapping the finalprojects between students for some freeminded fresh ideas and input.
Long life to this thread!
been playing too much Residnet Evil 4 lately and would like to see her up to par, conceptually.
[edit]replaced with non-texture shot as per rule change. you may need to refresh you cache [/edit]
Speaking of whom, here's another sketch of her only this one is of her when she's 20 years younger and flat-chested.
I'll draw up a sketch of one of these other concepts later on tonight when I get home.
Few things others may enjoy toying with (sorry for the large images):
EDIT: haha notice what it says on the 3rd image I posted? Look at it upside down
wonder where he got the gun
cool stuff so far!
Hook it up!
I'll do something shortly from somebody elses work.
hope you guys are getting the idea that you should take these concepts and just start running with them, it can be as distant from the original as you please. go where the spirit moves you!
i took Gmanx's walker, and with a series of transforms and filters i came up with an almost abstract field of mechanical parts. from that i just started to pull out forms. now it's a flying time machine flying on infinitely through a wormwhole, with a long-dead pilot still strapped in. see if you can pick out the bits that came from the original drawing
edit: KDR that's perfect, with them all on the same line there's no need to combine them into one image now, thanks!
and the final one for the evening. i'm getting quite tired and the end of that one just got a little goofy as you can see anyone can feel free to pick up the slack and give this guy another go-round! in my paintover he's a diabolical cultist of some sort, but i didn't really have the time to work over those hands properly. but in any case justin, i've always liked that model of yours
Some really good/original/varied input in this thread. Excellent idea.
AdamBrome this is yours if you squint *very hard*
'Mother nature to mankind: this is for messing with genetics'
Adam's cartoony robot dude, reconfigured for deployment on the battlefield. Probably made in their thousands by General Motors.
AdamBrome > Gmanx
I've been trying to draw Kristian's spikey hair guy but I'm not liking what comes out.
Here's something out of my current sketchbook
concept i drew this morning
Gauss: Great idea for a thread, I'll have a dig around and see if I can find any of my stuff to post. Looks like it'll be fun to give some others a going-over too
I started drawing Buzza but I took a wrong turn somewhere and this is how it ended up.
Better luck next time.
ok.
This guy was actually my first model. I'll try to find the model but belive me it SUCKS! but I always liked the concept.
Liontaur
Moleman
A native american take on the God Thor.
Cool.
i'm going to have to get around to making some more entries here, there's just too much stuff that pushes cool buttons.
Let this thread grow FAT !
This is my take on Kristian/gauss concept.
Kristian > gauss > cep
The pose sucks, but it's about time I post something.
but while i'm at it, here's another oldie-but-goodie some folks might remember--Pinkerton!
one of my first completed models! Mr Roboto
and i humbly present my take on Slaughter's power armor guy...
the story is that there was some ill-advised research for 'camoflage covering,' for the powersuits, and a series of unbelievable bureaucratic snafus led to this:
Slaughter > gauss
while horribly suited for 'camoflage' of any sort, the few existing specialized powersuit covers were retained by the psychological warfare division and have been enormously successful in their limited deployment.
Oh man Gauss ... you made chili come out of my shnozz.
[/ QUOTE ]ouch! that's gotta hurt.
an initial contribution: Sam. he's not local.
go nutz.
Go easy on me...first time i sketched something on the computer.
Kristian>Slaughter
Here´s another unfinished model...
Ribking's ogre takes a ribbing. Ribking>chip
anyone wanna give this a try?
here's a take on Slaughter's slaughterBot. with thighs like that, this thing had to be a leaper.
Slaughter>chip
gauss, this thread is primo, just the therapy for those of the recently unemployed persuasion.
AdamBrome > Kristian!
And regarding the fatmarine...gauss, may god forgive you for what you have unleashed.
