kaktuzlime, thank you for the comment! Agree, I should put more attention into anatomy and proportions, that's my weak point.
Amazing works as always, by the way.
Trying to finish off this character concept illustration, might still get back to it for more a more polished look. Might drop it to the 2D ConceptBank thread as well :-)
Hofsta: Good job dude! Been nice to follow this one, feels like you pushed yourself (in a good way).
A lot of nice stuff here as usual! Been busy with the matte painting class over at CGMA, if you wanna upgrade your photobashing skills I can highly recommend it. It's high paced, but rewarding!
I've been developing this fighter over the past few weeks after thumbing it out. Im getting ready to think about compositions but probably won't get any further until after GDC.
So close yet feeling so far away on this. Critique absolutely welcome! There are a few more elements that need to be added back in to account for some of the lighting and bounce lighting.
Thanks wizo and87roach Lot's of cool stuff here in the forum. Nice to see a place where people share.
Saberlin - You could try adjusting leg position a bit. For now it is somewhat hard to read the movement and exact position of the bent leg. You have that blue orb and You could use it as a light source for some side light on the character. Also the blue orb is leading my eye from the main character. It is way brigther than the character and has the most contrasting colors in the whole painting so it becomes a focus center instantly.
@Dado: I can see a lot of cool things happening there! I love the bird-man. @Gintas: Beautiful Brushwork. @korpehn: nice work, but I can clearly see the photobashed pictures. Try to blend them a little bit more. @Mossed Neuronn: Cool stuff, but yeah, definitely you need to put more attention to anatomy. Try to make some studies from real life and photos.
Some studies! I recently bought a Cintiq 22hd and I'm trying to improve my rendering and brush economy:
My favorite is the 0002 one, really love the stylized proportions, exaggerated hips and sketchy look
Greens and leather mix nicely, and you really rendered the leather well, something I'm struggling hard with ...
Do you mind if I give a couple crits though ?
1. Others mentioned the weird ribcage/hands, But I totally dig that whole eccentric pose & proportions, so here's an quick fix rather than change.
2. As for the latest one, was that supposed to be metal ? if so the rendering is weird, usually metal is dark and defined by high specularity / reflections instead.
mariomanzanares, thank you! By the way, I was always wondering: what is better 1-2 min fast gesture studies or deep examination of one photo? Chai, wow thank you! Especially with a metal. It definitely looks better. It also fixes levels issue and puts more attention to skin areas, I think.
Anyway, here's a new time lapse. I was trying more step-by step process and it ended up messing levels I think. And also, there's a huge distortion in hands and face. Is there any way to notice more mistakes at sketch, so you can fix them early on, not when the piece is almost finished?
Mossed Neuronn: Well, I think those are different things for different purposes. A deep examination works better for me because I'm interested in things like the subtleties of the skin or the way shadows work. Also, when you analyze a picture for some minutes, you start realizing things that you didn't see at the beginning. That said, quick studies are great for building a strong sense of gesture and silhouette. If you could do both of them that would be great, but what works best for me is to make a quick sketch (1 or 2 minutes) and then overdraw until I'm satisfied. That way you correct the mistakes from the fast drawing, but it's very important to develop a sense of "when to stop" before you start overdoing things and you lose the gesture (what happens to me A LOT).
Btw, I see a lot of improvement in your pieces, and that's one of the best features of a good artist. Keep up the good work!
geck, great perspective! I even tried rotating the art to see how it looks and it's looking good there, not to mention cool lighting, especially column shadow in the right.
Hofsta: Thank you! I really like your scene too, very powerful. Maybe the sunset could have been toned down a little bit to give the girl more focus though? Just a thought.
Building on my little troll family for a while, this time a mountain troll! Taking some inspiration from the Hobbit movies this time.. ^^;
We are tinkering with some laser beam designs for the endgear weapon. Its an olshool arcade game. Thinner twin beams or one single deathray? What do you think? PEW PEW!
Gnashed: Thanks man, you're probably right about the sunset, but I had to wrap it up and move on. Everything you've been posting has been looking tight dude!
