Cast iron cookware isn't a good reference to look at, as the surface is "seasoned". What you're actually looking at on the surface is a thin layer of fat that has been heat treated, which is what makes cast iron cookware non-stick. Speedtree isn't actually that fast to render as the geometry isn't that efficient. A hand modeled tree will render as fast as a speedtree as long as it has LODs.
