I made a smart mask but some of the information isn't getting to all the nooks and crannies I want. Is there a way in PS to have the brush shape completely disappear when you are applying paint to the canvas? I find the brush shape to be annoying and get in the way most of the time.

There's a couple ways you can decrease influence. Paint using the replace option with a value less than 1. You can also paint using the add option with a negative value.
