Rightclick, break is the option you are looking for. Select the edges and break em, then move the islands apart And you shouldnt need to move points closer, just raise the weld treshold. If yiu set it to 1 you should be able to weld everything in the 0-1 range into one clump :)

Hey ive been wondering. i set a hotkey for set flow in max 2012, and when i try to do this with an edge i get a maxscript error, saying "Setflow wanted 1, got 2" i imagine because its trying to do this for vertices when edges is selected do i have to set a separate hotkey for set flow for edges?

By increasing the material's glow past the limit, the bloom is "activated" by it sooner, making other bright things in the scene less bright by comparison. So those other objects shouldn't glow anymore. Set the object's glow really high, past the limit, then play around with those bloom settings again.
