Hello When i use instant mesh to auto retopologize any mesh (to around lets say 10 000 quad polygons), export it to obj format and try to import it to 3ds max. It doesnt have any smoothing groups (the faces are not smoothed at all). The problem is when i try to add the smoothing under "Polygon: smoothing groups" it doesnt…
I was able to resolve the issue now. Thanks to the hint with the sharp edges, I smoothed out my model using the sculpting smooth tool. :) Thanks for your time, guys!
Hello, I wonder if I need smoothing groups/hard edges if I will apply normal map on model? Do I need smoothing groups/hard edges if I am baking with cage? Without a cage?
Good stuff from Poop. This is for max, right? From the help file: [ QUOTE ] Smoothing groups define whether a surface is rendered with sharp edges or smooth surfaces. Smoothing groups are numbers assigned to the faces or patches of an object. Each face or patch can carry any number of smoothing groups up to the maximum of…
Would anyone perhaps know of a way to surpass the 32 smoothing group limit in 3ds max? I'm currently making Collision model of a Swimming Pool for Garry's Mod and was just curious if there was perhaps a plugin to add more smoothing groups numbers.
I think your mesh looks good, but it seems it's triangulated or the smoothing groups are messed up. If you want it smoother, just add smoothing groups in max. select the element (hotkey 5) and hit autop smooth to start, then take off the smoothing where you want it to be rough. Another option is to take that mesh if it has…
The door problem is definetely the usuall smoothing group problem. It's not apparent with round objects as they need higher smoothing groups in the first place to look smooth. If removing the smoothing groups fixed the problem in your model then it should be the same problem somehow. Did you try subdividing the lowpoly…
Hard UV shells - do you mean assigning different smoothing groups (in max terms) for each shell? Vertices are already separated there GPU-wise so what's the harm in separating smoothing groups too?
I think the file does have smoothing groups. They are just really oddly set up. You could fully split your verts where you want smoothing splits and then smooth everything. It's pretty hacky but it seems like that might be your most reliable way to control smoothing.
So, I decided to start smoothing some of the assets, that I think wont need scuplting. Used a simple subdivision modifier and then smooth modifiers with shade smooth. I plan to bake this into the low polies. What do you think of this approach?
