Hand-painted texturing tecniques from 2000s?
I'm recently working on a nostalgic project, making homage to the classic games of early 00s. I'm trying to mimic the look, but i can't get it right. My textures always end up looking like Torchlight or WOW. A few examples of what i have in mind: -
Critique my hand painted cube please?
I got the idea of painting a simple cube from Blizzard's Peet Cooper who came and spoke at our school awhile back. I experimented with forced perspective and feel the effect turned out pretty good however, the biggest drawback is that you can't rotate the camera at all :P -

Is it possible to somehow manually specify a region for details to be generated in? My model is mostly flat and I can't really imagine anything I can bake\paint in the normal map, but I want to create leaking rust like here.
