Hand Painting Tree Bark (Greyscale)

Greetings! This is a stylized tree bark that I'm working on for a school project. It's farther along than this image but only with the upper portions. The large chunks of White over-bark haven't really changed and I was hoping to get some insight. I have attempted several approaches to roughening it up and haven't been really happy with any of them. I've hit a tree in the road it seems. Thoughts and comments?

Updated the tree texture. Removed the white bark going over the tree and just using the base wood. Still a WIP and should be tile-able shortly.

I liked the swirls in the background of the bark crevices, what happened to them?

Looks way better then the old one! I like it.
What are you planning with it?
Will you use this in a node setup as some kind of overlay for some color??

@Fenyce - Thank you! This texture is going to be a base for a reusable tree asset. We're using a Gradient Overlay system so we can add color variation based on the greyscale values.

@SCarr - The small swirls in the crevices just really clashed with the jagged theme of the bark I was going for. That's why I'm adding in more of the hard-edged swirls across the bark to keep with the theme these trees is going to be in.

I'll continue posting updates until the texture is done and I'll see about posting the tree with it.

Looking good. Before you overlay color it might be fun to put it on a tree and take it into an engine to see if you like the values, especially after they are tiling. Looking forward to seeing more updates.
