isn't it simplier to use hard-edged round brush with spacing, then add inner glow (black color) for gradient and then run it through some normal map filter (xNormal, NVidia)? -

^Show it in edit mesh mode with edges visible, select edges option select entire chest, edit , click visible makes all the lines come up, looks like a normal issue. Try .fbx <- import to zbrush, might work if not select object, change the tangent space to xnormal, if doesn't help, its all i got. -
