Thanks a bunch guys! Will probably do more sculpts soon, lately I've been feeling like i should do a few game art pieces (aside from stuff for my cat game)
Meanwhile, not much art today. I discovered Bulletstorm in the steam sales yesterday. Fun is so unproductive.
I love your faces when you are drawing from your head like this. You have a shorthand for it that really appeals to me for some reason. Simple but aesthetically pleasing shapes If you can get your body proportions and gestures to flow just as nicely, your drawings are going to be amazing ! Keep up the practice, this thread has impressive mileage
Thanks a lot jessica! Unfortunately my art is pretty weak in every respect EXCEPT charming faces. But, hopefully, always improving!
I threw together a little wordpress site, finally, since i havent ever had a portfolio online. In the process i found a few old pieces that i never posted in here -- this ANCIENT gun and some abandoned concept art for the cat game.
I beg to differ SupRore, you are too hard on yourself I think :poly142: Keep up the constant work, it's inspiring, and hooray for making a portfolio! :]
Doodles, from imagination, as is typical. Reaping the benefits of some small epiphanies about drawing. Excited to do some studies, I think i'm finally starting to understand how to approach drawing in an effective way. Gonna try to squeeze some more in before work, will edit this post if i'm successful.
Not much to show... Did some loomis studies and doodles on postit notes but they aren't worth scanning in.
Today and yesterday and this weekend are consumed by work. I want to get some updates on the cat game soon, hopefully next week.
I WOULD STILL LOVE FEEDBACK ON CATKILO.WORDPRESS.COM -- I'VE GOT A THREAD HERE
some points i noticed:
eyes are lil spaced far apart.
you're havin trouble with the 3/4 view as you merged the brow bone and temporal into one mass.
jaw lines do no reflect the angle of the head. neither the ears.
i suggest draw from reference alot more. and take note of landmarks/relationships of features (as stated in the bridgeman books) .
as you progress, your heads will appear more consistant level of quality.
also render your forms with a little more care. even tho its a sketch =p
Thanks guys! SSquir33, good crits, will definitely pay attention to that.
Meanwhile, i'm muddling through trying to get some basic design functionality (mostly parameters for triggers and spawners so i can design/script levels) for my unity game... And making a lot of mistakes:
wahhh havent been drawing as much presentable stuff lately. One of these days i'm going to have some big updates on my unity game! But so far it's really slow going -- long hours at work and intimidating art problems to try and conquer.
Meanwhile, here are drawings of cartoon lions to keep the thread warm.
Also see! Slightly less lines! I'm getting there!
Even though i havent gotten as much of a body of work done as i shouldve this last couple weeks, i feel my understandings of how to
a- draw accurately and well
b- make cool videogames
are steadily improving, so my time has in some ways still been profitable.
The unity game is at a point where you can run around and shoot clones of yourself and blow up explosive barrels -- it's simplistic, but has a lot of the feel I want. I have some pretty big hurdles to jump for designing levels and making decent environment art/animations, however. For my simple first game, it's proving to be very challenging and yet kinda promising. REALLY want to get to a point where i can start showing it off in here -- having a reasonably polished, if simplistic, game to share would be a huge step toward doing the things I want to do.
Ending the year with a bit of a whimper. Been sick, haven't been making much art lately, and what i've been making is pretty ugly and uninspired. This is a bunch of recent sketchbook pages with a few(!!) cool drawings here and there.
oh and here's a kinda embarrassingly messy paintover i did for gilesruscoe. I need to stop making these so embarrassingly sloppy!
I would love to see some more refined paints from you. Everything is super dope but seeing something with more "finish" I guess you could say would be awesome
You ever notice how in rpgs and fantasy games, people get WAY COOLER as they 'level up', but in military games everybody is super bland? I envision a world where soldiers build swagger faster than they can receive commendations. A little bit X-COM inspired.
definitely worth looking around not only at PMCs but also our own under-equipped military, particularly with regards to humvee armor and the like. Would be really interesting to see a character start with really basic equipment, then shift to increasing complex and sophisticated improvised gear, until you get to the point of custom manufacture high speed low drag super-suits or whatever
Thanks wake! Yeah, that is a good idea to pursue. So much cool stuff happens when you combine high tech materials with low tech improvisation. A game came out recently called Bodycount that did some baller stuff with that idea.
Meanwhile, i need to draw more! Some lazy doodles.
Thank you guys! Yeah yeah, will get a new sketchbook without lines soon
got a couple days off work. Warmup doodle. May iterate him out into a more polished concept, but the whole head/neck/arms/legs are pretty wobbly and bleh as it is.
Loving the sketches man, a lot of talent. I took a look at your portfolio too. Only thing that bugged me was the lack of any fully finished + polished peices of artwork. Would love to see something in the near future!
It's good to see you practicing so much and pushing your drawing + anatomy skills. Keep it up!
I think what is missing as a basis in most of them is a lack of under structure. It looks like you're working with contours of the form without truly understanding the connection between each of the shapes and how they affect one another.
As I'm sure people have said before, get the pose in a few seconds, by way of a quick gesture of the spine/ line of action, the shoulders and hip tilts, the position of the arms and legs in correspondence.
A few really good books to check out.
Vilppu, he has really great instruction on building from gesture to full forms.
The Force
Andrew Loomis
Bridgeman (I recommend the others first since his is more technical with specific muscles.)
If you can attend as many life drawing sessions as you can, and draw people at different places like at cafes or those just walking around an area.
Good luck! + Happy creating!
If you have any other questions feel free to ask me!
Thank you guys! Brittany, thanks for reminding me about the force... I have a sizeable list of books I need to buy.
I mapped my bamboo to one monitor, which had never really occurred to me before for some reason. This gives me a very significant increase in dpi with my tablet, which is awesome, and makes up for how low-end it is a little.
It's coming eventually! Hopefully really soon! MEANWHILE, today was incredibly unproductive, and then this evening i devoted some time into trying to make peace with traditional medium. Baby steps. These all feel very stiff and awkward, to me... I really need to build up confidence.
Feels like i have so little time to draw! Been jamming with pencil the last few days, now back to this project. Both of these dudes ended up a bit skewed for now. Damnit.

Damn man, you've been killing it lately. Great character work, though I'd love to see something tighter from you.
Doing some thumbnailing for a more finished concept.
Unrelated, just learning about tanks.
